Mitch Davis is a Canadian songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist.

Who inspired you to make music?

In the earliest days, definitely my family. My mom is a music teacher who wrote songs for us all the time, my dad is a huge music fan who would play jazz in the house daily, and all 3 of my older siblings have played music since we were kids.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

It’s come in different waves I guess. Myspace still felt really social, and I met a lot of friends at that time. Facebook was great for events for a while when everyone was using it exclusively. Bandcamp has been a constant throughout and always felt relatively positive, though limited in features. Nowadays, Instagram isn’t quite as good for planning and publicizing events as others have been, and Spotify just feels like we’re all standing in Walmart passing out our CDs to the masses, the antithesis of underground.

Have you got a ritual of sorts when making music?

I only follow through with ideas that I fully believe in. For writing it’s often just whenever an idea hits me. But when actually recording I find a balance of a tiny bit of weed + a tiny bit of whiskey can reliably help me reach the zone pretty quick.

How would you describe your music?

I’ve made all sorts. I would call this album rock except it hardly has guitars and I have two instrumental piano pieces on it. I think it’s always basically.. introspective experiments in somewhat popish areas.

What’s next for you?

Released my debut LP on April 29th is super exciting, and I’m getting on the road through the USA in September which is always fun.

What are your top two favorite songs of all time? Why those songs?

Almost impossible to answer but I’ll just pick two recent ones which I like :).
‘Stevie Wonder – Too High’ is perfect and knowing he played all the instruments is a huge inspiration. I love playing in groups but the individualistic touch of a one-person band is special for me.
Also, I dunno if I’d call this a favorite of all time but I was obsessed with ‘Barry White – It’s Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me’ all last summer. Just such a good groove.

What was the last series you watched on TV?

I’m still watching the end of Attack on Titan and I have been casually obsessed for a few years now.

What do you think the greatest invention has been?

Soap? Antibiotics? The Piano? Tough call.

Do you have any lucky items, objects, or traditions?

Not really… I have some lingering OCD tendencies which could loosely fit those criteria though. I kinda always make both sides of my body “even”; if I touch something with one hand I usually have to touch the same thing or something similar with my other hand.

If you could ask your future self one question, what would it be?

A/S/L

If you had to describe yourself as a flavor, what would it be?

Something a lil sour and tangy I hope. I want to shock a little while still being wholly enjoyable.
