Marianas Trench is a Canadian rock group signed to Cherrytree and Interscope Records. The album ‘Astoria’ represents the band’s official comeback to the music scene and is named so after the band’s love of the 80’s film The Goonies. Astoria named so as the film was set in Astoria, Oregon and along with the album artwork and upcoming tour ‘Hey You Guys!!’ completes the overall theme.
This album has a little bit of everything for everyone. Every track is original and different from its intro (Astoria) which slowly leads you into the absolutely amazing vocal performances from lead singer Josh Ramsay and obviously well supported from band members Matt Webb, Mike Ayley and Ian Casselman. Astoria has a feel of a Queen/ Stephen Tyler (Aerosmith) scream running through the album and especially with the sudden tempo and melody changes make this album one for every type of mood.
The whole idea I feel behind this album is that Marianas Trench is looking to bring back that nostalgic sound of the 80’s with the iconic melodies and riffs usually associated with the bands of that time at the same time showing us that new original music is hard to find nowadays. But eventually, the album settles down into a more comfortable original sound that the band is recognized for, talented vocals delivered with a theatrical approach.
If you love strong vocals and upbeat tracks then this is the album for you. And it also packs an extra punch if you’re an 80’s baby for sure! Some tracks to look out for in my personal opinion are ‘This Means War’, ‘One Love’ and ‘Wildfire’. One thing for sure Marianas Trench fans will be itching to get their hands on the long-awaited new album as their last was almost four years ago and the listeners get a lot of bang for their buck with this album as it is a long one…and that’s not a bad thing.
