Kane Kalas’ cover of Frank Loesser’s classic “I’ve Never Been in Love Before” is a delightful and refreshing interpretation that captures the essence of the original ballad while giving it a contemporary twist. Kalas’ smooth vocals and impeccable depth breathe new life into the song, making it relatable and relevant to modern audiences.

Originally a duet from the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls between the characters Sky Masterson and Sister Sarah Brown, “I’ve Never Been in Love Before” is a charming and romantic song that portrays the excitement and anticipation of falling in love. It was originally performed by Isabel Bigley and Robert Alda, the father of legendary actor Alan Alda.

Kane’s rendition is faithful to Loesser’s melody and lyrics, but is infused with subtle liberties, making the interpretation original. His resonant voice and use of the piano to drive the melody invokes a deeper intimacy than the more narrative theatrical version.

The official music video for the song is equally enchanting. It transports the audience to a smokey, underground jazz club where Kalas, the featured performer, finds love — and lust. The imagery — from the elegance of a grand piano to the passion of budding romance on a misty evening — evoke a sense of nostalgia and longing.

Kalas’ upcoming debut album, High Hopes, is dedicated to his late father, Philadelphia Phillies’ Hall of Fame sportscaster, Harry Kalas. Each song of the album has a special connection to Kane’s famous father, including, “I’ve Never Been Loved Before,” which is one of several pieces on the album from Harry’s favorite musical, Guys and Dolls.

I fell in love with music when I first picked up a guitar at age 8. When I played, my friends and family would smile and spill with joy over the music I played, even though it was never Grammy quality. While my music career never made it past high school, my love for music never waivered. I loved the feeling of bringing a smile to someone's face through music and wanted to keep that passion going. So, I took it upon myself to continue to support and promote artists by writing about their music. This way, I can support my personal passion for music and bring entertain and joy to others through music.  Outside my love for music, I do enjoy a good hike and being in the outdoors. My favorite place that I've hiked is in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. I love to travel too. I've been to Costa Rica, Vancouver, BC, and England, but the best place by far is Germany on Oktoberfest. I liken that experience to being in New Orleans on Mardi Gras. I like a good book now and then, but I'm more of a streaming fiend. I live for crime docuseries on Netflix, veterinary shows on National Geographic, and re-watching Scrubs on Hulu.
