Shapeshifters

The two-piece industrial punk project The Tak3down is the Arizona based band formed in 2018 by Keith Wallace and Jon Kabir. Both members are no newbies to the scene. Previously they have released 4 full length albums with their punk metal band Sigma, performed over 500 shows nationwide, toured extensively and now back with new material and a new identity.

They are now releasing their second EP, Shapeshifters, where they explore new facets of industrial punk by turning up the gothic moody influences in their songs. The lyrics shoot a chilling arrow straight into the heart of the listener. This time the band is writing music what they love and experimenting with more industrial electronic sounds.

Opening with “The Chosen Ones,” the track is a driving punk rock number, complete with powerful drums and distorted guitars. The real standout, however, is the lyrics, which are both politically charged and deeply personal. This is a theme that runs throughout the EP, and it’s clear that The Tak3down have something to say.

As the EP progresses, the industrial and electronic elements become more prominent. The title track, “Shapeshifters,” is a perfect example of this, with its ominous synths and glitchy beats. The chorus is a catchy earworm that will stay with you long after the song has ended. “Poison” is another standout, with its hard-hitting drums and distorted guitars. The lyrics, once again, are raw and emotional.

The EP closes with “Deadweight,” a haunting ballad that showcases The Tak3down’s softer side. The track is a departure from the rest of the EP, but it serves as a powerful conclusion to the journey. The vocals are emotive and vulnerable, and the sparse instrumentation allows them to shine.

Shapeshifters is a masterclass in blending genres and exploring new sounds. It’s a must-listen for fans of punk rock, industrial, and gothic music.

With their wealth of experience and undeniable talent, it’s clear that The Tak3down is a force to be reckoned with.

I fell in love with music when I first picked up a guitar at age 8. When I played, my friends and family would smile and spill with joy over the music I played, even though it was never Grammy quality. While my music career never made it past high school, my love for music never waivered. I loved the feeling of bringing a smile to someone's face through music and wanted to keep that passion going. So, I took it upon myself to continue to support and promote artists by writing about their music. This way, I can support my personal passion for music and bring entertain and joy to others through music.  Outside my love for music, I do enjoy a good hike and being in the outdoors. My favorite place that I've hiked is in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. I love to travel too. I've been to Costa Rica, Vancouver, BC, and England, but the best place by far is Germany on Oktoberfest. I liken that experience to being in New Orleans on Mardi Gras. I like a good book now and then, but I'm more of a streaming fiend. I live for crime docuseries on Netflix, veterinary shows on National Geographic, and re-watching Scrubs on Hulu.
