While singer/songwriter Jennifer Harper finds inspiration from the world around her, it’s often in or around water that she receives the most musical “downloads.”

One day while at the pool about to do laps, a message came to her. The words “I want you to know who I am. I’m Mary Magdalene” echoed in her mind, accompanied by a compelling melody that would ultimately shape her heartfelt acoustic adult contemporary song, “Mary Magdalene.”

She had been thinking about the song prompt that week from her songwriting circle to write about a historical figure. She had decided to write about Joan of Arc, but Mary Magdalene came to her.

Initially taken aback by this spiritual experience, Jennifer shared her creation with her songwriting circle, where it was met with genuine enthusiasm. However, she questioned whether the message she received was enough to stand alone as a musical piece. Seeking guidance, she sang it to a spiritual mentor who encouraged her to embrace and share the message she had been given.

“I was swayed by my inner voice  – who am I to bring a message from Mary Magdalene?” Jennifer shares. “It’s taken a lot of courage to share this with the world and I put it off for quite awhile.” Jennifer’s own knowledge of Mary Magdalene’s history and teachings may be limited, but she acknowledges the resonance and relevance of her story in today’s spiritual landscape. Recognizing that Mary Magdalene has often been misunderstood, slandered, and her influence hidden throughout history, Jennifer was captivated by stories of her sacred sexual powers and the untold aspects of her life.

Through “Mary Magdalene,” Jennifer seeks to connect women on spiritual paths, inviting them to embrace their own power, speak out, and recognize the interconnectedness of all through love. With delicate acoustic instrumentation and a tender vocal performance, Jennifer captures the essence of empowerment and the significance of finding one’s voice. The song serves as a reminder to believe in our own power and to acknowledge the strength that lies within.

I fell in love with music when I first picked up a guitar at age 8. When I played, my friends and family would smile and spill with joy over the music I played, even though it was never Grammy quality. While my music career never made it past high school, my love for music never waivered. I loved the feeling of bringing a smile to someone's face through music and wanted to keep that passion going. So, I took it upon myself to continue to support and promote artists by writing about their music. This way, I can support my personal passion for music and bring entertain and joy to others through music.  Outside my love for music, I do enjoy a good hike and being in the outdoors. My favorite place that I've hiked is in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. I love to travel too. I've been to Costa Rica, Vancouver, BC, and England, but the best place by far is Germany on Oktoberfest. I liken that experience to being in New Orleans on Mardi Gras. I like a good book now and then, but I'm more of a streaming fiend. I live for crime docuseries on Netflix, veterinary shows on National Geographic, and re-watching Scrubs on Hulu.
