Joshua Red Uttech grew up in Eastgate, a suburb of Bellevue, WA.  His music is sometimes described as a mix of Chris Cornell and The Beatles, with touches of pop, blues, R&B, and country.  In 2021, Joshua Red Uttech released his EP “A Little Bit of Change”.

His roots began in choirs and singing along to anything his family was playing.  With a large family of 12, there was no shortage of diversity in music choice.  From The Beatles, Garth Brooks, and Depeche Mode to Bob Marley, Boyz II Men, and Megadeth.  With such an eclectic mix of influence, it’s no wonder Red has such a vast expanse to his sound.

What first got you into music?

I always loved singing, and always wanted to learn to play guitar. I wrote ok songs with the bands I was in, but once I started playing guitar and writing my own music, I think the songs got much better. I have always been drawn to the rush of performing.

Who are your main musical influences?

The Beatles, Willie Nelson, Chris Cornell, Jim Croce, Lewis Capaldi

What are your ambitions as a songwriter and musician from here?

To continue recording the 100+ songs I have written over the last 20 years, and to continue performing live regularly. I am planning a cross country tour in the next year, and that will be quite an adventure!

What is your current music project about?

It’s about my last love, and the songs go in a full spectrum. Happy and elated, sad and crushed, to hopeful and growing.

What is your biggest musical challenge?

At the moment, I am learning a fingerstyle technique that is very difficult. It’s where your thumb runs the rhythm, and your treble fingers are doing melodies rhythmically independent from the thumb. It’s really difficult!

How do you deal with writer’s block?

I honestly don’t worry about it too much. I know I will continue to write songs, and I know they come out when they are supposed to. I don’t put pressure on myself to write songs on a schedule.

What’s next for you?

I’m recording my 1st full length album that will be out in 2022 and continuing to book shows around the Pacific Northwest. Planning to visit Europe for a few weeks in 2022 and play a few shows while I am there!

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

Funnily enough, I don’t really sing in the shower! I may from time to time, but I think I do a lot of my thinking and relaxing while in the water.

What makes you nostalgic?

Music really does. When a song from your past comes on, especially a favorite and you haven’t heard it in a really long time, man, that is quite a feeling to take you back!

What was the last TV series you watched on TV?

Currently finishing the Vikings series and looking forward to watching the spinoff series that came out. I have vast Scandinavian heritage and I am really interested in my ancestor’s culture.

Which is cooler? Dinosaurs or Dragons?

Dragons all day! Flying, breathing fire, and they just look so cool in the drawings and videos nowadays. I’m also a gamer and love the Elder Scrolls series, and love Skyrim and the Dragonborn quests.

What’s your favourite children’s story?

The Avocado Baby. About a baby who eats avocados and has super strength! lmao 🙂
