A humanitarian, musician, and actress: Jessica Antoine is taking the entertainment industry by storm. As a first generation American from Haiti (by way of Miami), Jessica is pioneering the way for other young artists, breaking generational curses, and being sure to give back to others.
Whether it is volunteering her time, giving back to others in non-profits, or lending her platform for others to have a voice, Jessica remains humbled and rooted in her “why”, always remembering that to whom much is given, much is required.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
I am what reggae fusion is. My sound will always be embedded with my Caribbean roots blended with contemporary R&B and a splash of pop.
What led you to become a music artist, and what advice can you give to others aspiring to make a hit?
Music saved my life. Music is a huge part of my culture.
My advice is to always be yourself. Your authenticity is your superpower. Trust your instincts always. Surround yourself with like minded visionaries that want to see you succeed. Build your team and stick by them, you can’t do this alone.
Has your musical journey had a deliberate direction, or did it simply gradually evolve in whatever direction it found?
Yes! I have been in love with music all my life. I remember when I was a little girl performing in front of my family putting on shows. I’ve always known what I wanted to do in life. I’ve always known that my biggest dreams would come true. I’ve always been a visionary. I’ve always known this is the life God has written for me. I’m so grateful for this.
If we were to peek over your shoulder, what do your studio sessions look like? What gear do you typically use? What do you take with you in the studio?
I usually don’t bring much to the studio session. I always need to be hydrated, and I always have a throat coat cup of tea next to me that I most likely have been drinking all day, complimented with some lemon and honey. I like to have a 20 minute warm-up at least prior to me entering the booth. Aside from that, I’m most likely humming all day and doing some humming exercises. I like the philosophy of stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready, but I still get ready, lol.
What is your current music project “Intentional” about?
Intentional is a relative dating storyline. Depending on your walk in your life, “Intentional” can speak to you from previous experiences to current experiences. It is about the growth of the individual in the process. In the end you realize that choosing yourself is your biggest superpower.
Furthermore, in the EP, you can hear that I’m singing in three languages, two of which are spoken on the island of Haiti, French and Haitian Creole. I’m excited that when people listen, they’re getting a cultural experience.
What would be a good theme song for your life?
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray, You never know dear how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away
(One of my older sisters would sing this to me before bed) I consider this my forever lullaby.
What do you think the greatest invention has been?
I think it’s a plane. I am such a traveling nomad that loves culture. I love learning, exploring and experiencing new things. I call myself the Haitian Dora the Explorer. I don’t know how I would get to other places I want to see without a plane. I want to see the world. I have seen four continents and 14 countries so far. My favorite country I have visited so far has to be Ghana, I go every December.
If you were to write an autobiography, what would the title be?
You thought I was the underdog…. Shame on you surviving people …
If you could ask your future self-one question, what would it be? Are you happy?
You are a new addition to a crayon box. What color would you be and why?
I would be lavender because it’s my favorite color. Purple is royalty , and I am a Goddess that carries herself as such. It’s fitting.
