Burlington is that Sunday cruising, “chill-in-the-park”, “feel-good” kind of musician. As a singer, songwriter and producer Burlington explores the sound of life, aiming to create songs that get your soul grooving.
Burlington, this being his second musical presence, decided to shift over into indie-pop when he realized that he did not have to be attached to one single sound. This genre allows him to explore his more acoustic and alternative sound whilst his alter ego “Matto” allows him the freedom to create that ever loved house music.
As a part time musician, Burlington says his day jobs feeds his stomach, but his music feeds his soul.
Who inspired you to make music?
My main inspiration has come from my dad. He used to play and sing my sister and I to sleep nearly every night when we were younger.
He has always been very supportive and encourages me to sing and play all the time.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
I feel there has been both a positive and negative impact.
The positive impact, which I believe is more significant, is how easy it is to access music from artists from every corner of the globe, and how accessible it is for artists to release their songs. You can really discover some great music out there from your least expected places.
The negative impact is that it has become a very saturated market so trying to get your own music out there can be quite difficult, you can get lost in the mass of music being released every day.
Have you got a ritual of sorts when writing and thinking about your music?
I wouldn’t say I have ritual, but I guess I normally always start with the guitar or piano and write a chord progression, then I start writing the lyrics over that.
How would you describe your music?
I would describe it as easy listening that fits perfectly for a road trip in the summertime to the beach while the windows are down, and the wind is in your hair. It’s hard to beat those days.
What’s next for you?
I am releasing my debut album at the end of April so I am really looking forward to that and then I want to play those songs at as many shows as I can.
What are your top two favourite songs of all time? Why those songs?
I have so many favourite songs from different genres so that is a difficult one but if I had to choose songs that have inspired me, they would be:
John Mayer – In Your Atmosphere
- I remember my dad buying the “Where the light is” John Mayer DVD and watching him perform that song, it blew my mind. I worked hard for many hours to learn how to play it. It has just stuck with me since then and is super fun to play and sing.
Deadmau5 – The Veldt
- Very different from the music I make but this song was the soundtrack to my university days and apart from being an awesome tune it taught me loads about synths which was invaluable.
What was the last series you watched on TV?
I am a Motorsport fanatic, so it was “MotoGP Unlimited”. In terms of a fictional series, it is currently “New Girl” which is hilarious, and I keep rewatching it.
What do you think the greatest invention has been?
There are 2, guitars and motorbikes.
Do you have any lucky items, objects, or traditions?
No, I have never had traditions or lucky items. Maybe I haven’t found them yet?
If you could ask your future self one question, what would it be?
How many guitars and motorbikes do you have? Haha
What did you do to feel whole?
I’m just an empty shell….
I don’t really understand the question 😂
If you had to describe yourself as a flavour, what would it be?
Zesty
