Choosing the right shoe can be tricky. After all, it is a critical component of any outfit. From comfort and style to this year’s trends, there are many factors to consider before deciding on the perfect pair of shoes for your event. So, how can you go about making sure you find a pair you’ll love? Start with this guide to find the right pair of shoes for any event or party.

Here are a few questions you should ask yourself when making your decision:

Is the occasion dressy or casual?

The first thing to consider is whether the event you’re attending is a formal or casual occasion. For instance, you probably wouldn’t wear the same style of shoe for a gala that you would for a friend’s baby shower. In addition to the specific occasion, you also want to think about who is hosting the event. Do they typically tend to be on the more formal end of the spectrum, or are they more casual in their own style?

For example, if you’re part of the bridal party for a farmhouse wedding it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a nice pair of wedding flats. However, if you’re attending a special church event, you’ll likely want to opt for heels to pair with your favorite pant suit. And, while flip-flops and sandals aren’t the right fit for a fancier event, you can definitely wear them to your nephew’s birthday party at the park or a company bonfire.

What’s the season?

As you know, certain shoe styles are more appropriate for different seasons. It wouldn’t be fitting to wear a pair of over-the-knee boots to dinner in July but they’re perfect for a girl’s night out in fall. That being said, there are some exceptions. There are some styles of booties that never go out of style, no matter the season. And similarly, there are some strappy sandals and heels that you can wear with your formal wear during the fall and winter.

When choosing a pair of shoes for the event, you should also think about whether it’s taking place inside or outside. You’ll usually have more options when it comes to indoor events because it’s warmer. Outside events can become tricky, especially when you have to consider terrain—it would be difficult to wear stilettos to a vow renewal ceremony on the beach.

Will you be standing a lot?

If you’re going to be standing, walking, or dancing quite a bit, comfort should be a priority. Selecting a shoe with the right support is important to make sure you’re not wincing in pain walking to your car at the end of the night. While a pair of four-inch heels might be fine if you’re going to be sitting through an awards ceremony, wedges might be a better option if you’ll be standing at the horse races for a few hours.

If it’s a particularly long event, shoe inserts are most likely a good idea. Even if your shoes are typically comfortable, a long evening of dancing can put a lot of stress on your feet.

What’s the style of your outfit?

Last but not least, you want to choose shoes that complement the style of your outfit. When pairing your shoes with the rest of your ensemble, think about the colors, patterns, and embellishments that might clash with one another. The key to great style is making sure every aspect of your outfit compliments one another.

If you choose to go with a more casual pair, dress up your ensemble with the right accessories. One or two pieces of classy jewelry can easily take your outfit to the next level. However, just make sure you don’t overdo it. For example, if your shoes have a bold design, like a large buckle or sequins, keep your accessories simple and sophisticated

One last thing to keep in mind is your own personal style. What types of shoes do you like to wear? At the end of the day, your comfort and confidence are most important to ensure that you look and feel your best. With these tips as your guide, finding the right shoes to wear to your upcoming event or party should be a breeze.
