South African rock duo, Future Radio, releases their first ever rock ballad, Constant State of War. This dark alternative rock track deals with the struggles of letting go of a toxic relationship, that is almost like a drug.
Constant State of War is a moody ballad that is ripe with emotive verses, hard-hitting choruses, and a powerful bridge, capturing the band’s versatility. The vocal delivery is sensitive, fragile, yet compelling, which is something we haven’t heard from Future Radio to date. Dynamically the song is rich in movement, symbolising the highs and lows that are synonymous with addiction, and lyrically it tells the story of the struggle of letting go of someone you once loved.
This is a first for Future Radio, whose songs are generally energetic and up tempo. Johnny Future, songwriter and frontman, concur that this is unlike anything they’ve done in the past. “I’ve been messing around with the guitar motif for a very long time, and I am pleased that it finally found a home. Constant State of Wars’ theme is relatable because most people I know have been in at least one relationship that they struggle to let go of,” he elaborates.
The music video or Act 14, as the band calls it, also makes use of the war theme, but this time around the war is internal. “In this act, our protagonist comes face to face with his evil self, which is an embodiment of all his fears and insecurities”, explains visual artist and guitarist, Drikus Roets. “I believe that the world will be a more peaceful place if we can first deal with the evil within us,” he continues.
The band continue to gain momentum with each new release. As Anselm Anderson from Rambling Man’s Reviews writes: “Future Radio continues to release solid rock tracks that appeal to the listener as the band grows into their own”. Their last single, You Can’t Ignore Me Anymore, was playlisted on Apple Music’s official, The New Rock, playlist. With their consistent and creative content, they have accumulated over 19K Instagram followers, which is quite the feat for such a young band. Constant State of War promises to reach new fans for this hardworking and talented duo.
