The Hat Ladies have just released a new children’s album, “You’re a Star” and it is a fun and family-friendly album. The songs can be enjoyed by all ages. The Hat Ladies and their album “You’re a Star” are featured in national media and TV. We caught up with The Hat Ladies to discuss their new children’s music album “You’re a Star” and more.
Tell us a bit about your new album?
“You’re a Star” is kind of a perfect storm for us as it brings together our parallel careers as music educators and touring musicians, songwriters, and producers.
We started the recording process by creating a list of songs that we had already written for our classrooms over the years. After a little curating, we were left with four songs. We wrote five more to make the album complete. We had a big dry erase board in the studio and checked off boxes as we completed tracks.
Usually when we make records, we start with the drums for all the songs, then the bass for all the songs, guitars for all the songs etc. But with “You’re a Star,” we recorded one song at a time. What I liked about this process is that we really got inside each song as it was carefully arranged and rearranged until we felt it was done.
A couple of fun facts; Joanie improvised most of “Hat Ladies Party Song” and we kept her very first take. Another fun fact is that “Human” was co-written by The Hat Ladies, Jeremy Wendel Jones, and our students at our summer performing arts program. Another fun fact is that “When I go To School” was written about an actual 3rd grader who was having such a tough time going to his first day but overcame his fear and is now thriving! Turns out it is about a lot of kids and grownups!
“You’re a Star is an outstanding album. Did you always know you would make a Children’s album?
I would say we always knew we would eventually make this album. It was a matter of us prioritizing our time and energy. We committed in May of 2024 to having it finished by August 27th, and we did it!!
The Grammy Awards are coming up soon. Many are saying your Children’s music album should be nominated for a Grammy Award. How does that make you feel?
OMG! We would be so honored. To be honest, reading this question gave us a surge of excitement! As lifelong musicians and educators, this is a bucket list item for The Hat Ladies.
Will you be performing at any upcoming shows?
We have a couple of appearances coming up that we are super excited to do. We had an amazing time recently doing a “Good Day Sacramento” CBS TV live performance. It was so much fun!
We are also very psyched about our YouTube Live Stream show set to air every Friday. We will be playing live, doing interviews, and much more! Be sure to check to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/@TheHatLadiesMusic
What is next for you?
We are feeling the momentum of this moment. Every day there are more opportunities and we cannot believe our luck. We will keep meeting people, playing music, teaching our classes, playing shows and grabbing the energy that floats by, never taking any of it for granted…a wild and beautiful Hat Ladies ride!!!
