(Calgary) October 1, 2021 — Calgary electro-pop singer-producer Selci is releasing the video for her single “Type and Send,” a lighthearted commentary on the endless cycle of back-and-forth text exchanges.
In the video, inspired by vintage nostalgia and directed by Calgary filmmaker Kidd Concept, the artist and her friends are shown roller skating and doing tricks while Selci distractedly texts.
“I’m poking fun at never-ending text conversations and that moment in a new connection when you’re texting with a crush, unsure if they’re into you,” she explains. “With every text sent, you wonder if you said something stupid or if they’ll text you back. But you just keep on typing and sending in an endless text loop.”
The saccharine synth-pop track, which features jokey lyrics over bursts of text bleeps, represents a departure in tone for the artist. Produced with sound engineer Sylvia Massy (Prince, Kate Bush), Selci describes how the sonic diversion came to be.
“Sylvia joked that I should channel my inner Katy Perry when we were recording,” Selci says. “This is probably the closest I’ll ever get to bubblegum pop.”

“Type and Send” follows Selci’s 2020 EP, A SOFT PLACE, which drew attention from BeatRoute, CBC Radio, EARMILK, Exclaim, Indie88, Refinery 29, and was listed as the #1 release on CJSW’s Top 20 Electronic Albums of 2020.
A companion zine to the EP, also called A SOFT PLACE, was recently released. The zine includes a collage of Selci’s own photography work, and Q&As with other creative minds, including keys player Timothonius, jewelry designer Sunday Feel, visual artist Abigail Wall, and dancer Creeasion. All proceeds from the sale of the zine will go to The Okra Project, a collective that seeks to address the global crisis faced by Black trans people by providing home-cooked, healthy, and culturally-specific meals and resources. Copies of the zine are available for purchase at selciofficial.com.
