More and more people are focussed on individualisation and expressing themselves in creative ways. One of those ways is by jewellery and piercings. Making your ear an artwork of itself shows worlds of difference in your outfit or look. So, what are the piercing trends most likely to pop off in 2022?

Minimalistic earrings

Minimalism has been very trending among millennials and often gen x with a higher income, take for example Kim Kardashian and her fully white house. The trend of having not as much to prickle your senses can be shown as minimalism. It can also come in forms of piercings.

Minimalistic piercings often do not have a wide range of colours, it is either white, black or some shade of brown. Nude colours have been quite the trend previous year, making diversity more important so brands have started to produce a wider range of skin coloured fashion, including jewellery.

Ear stacking

Ear stacking stand for many earrings/piercings on one ear. It makes the ear seem full of jewellery and attracts a lot of attention when wearing a ponytail or a hair style that shows your ears. Ear stacking can be done in different ways: same colours, same style or same materials. You can even stack according to a theme, for example constellations. When stacking according to constellations, you could have helix piercings in form of a moon and different stars and planets. This pulls the whole look together and makes it an interesting way of showing your piercings.

Acrylic piercings

Acrylic piercings are often cheaper than metal ones. They can come in a variety of colours that metal earrings and piercing cannot achieve, for example matte blue or pink. A metal earring can be blue or pink, but it will always have the shiny, metallic look not all people want. Not only acrylic piercings be coloured, but they can also be see through, making it look like glass but less fragile.

A rather less positive effect of acrylic piercings is their sustainability. They are not sustainable, nor do they have a long lifespan compared to golden or silver earrings. They can be very pretty but after all, sustainability is becoming more and more important over the years as we see the climate change rather quickly. This is why the next trend is coming up:

Local-bought, sustainable earrings

As the years go on, people and brands have to adapt to the world. Due to Covid-16, many small businesses have been struggling to keep up. This made more people, quarantined or isolated in their house, become more aware of this problem. Not only did people prefer to buy locally or from local piercing shops or smaller stores, but it gives a feeling of satisfaction and pride. Instead of feeding the global market leaders in jewellery, millennials started to prefer small businesses on Instagram and other social media platforms. Sustainability and diversity have been coming up with the trends, affecting what people are choosing to wear and where to buy.

There are many trends that have not been mentioned before but these trends are one of the most influencing ones for Gen z.
