What is your creative process like?
It’s not the same for each song, nor is it a linear process. But I’m a poet at heart, so more often than not I’m starting with a lyrical idea. Depending on the theme, I’ll tinker around on the piano or a chord progression app to capture the feel. I like seeing if I can write the melody for the chorus first to capture the essence of the song, then go from there. But I’ve written a lot of other songs where the verses were pinned down a lot quicker than the chorus.
I can confidently say, though, that my heart posture towards my creative process is always one of play. The act of creating music is an oasis for my heart. I feel the most like myself when I’m writing lyrics or melodies.
Please tell us more about your new album.
As my faith in Jesus has deepened over the years, I’ve increasingly yearned to convey His heart and my experiences with Him in more daring ways. I met my mentor and collaborator Kyle Novy of Cultivated Music in 2021, with whom I worked to develop songs that champion the God of Scripture yet defy the molds of contemporary Christian music. So my album, FEAST, is an eclectic and poetic collection spanning pop, R&B/soul, and experimental sounds, offering a fresh take on worship music. It’s a ‘feast’ for the ears as well as lyrically, so I definitely encourage you to tuck in and indulge!

What do you enjoy most about being an artist?
I simply love making music that I enjoy, that also challenges & teaches me something new during the process of writing. The cherry on top? Witnessing my songs find a home in other people’s hearts.

What draws you to your preferred genre?
I don’t know if I have a preferred genre yet; my debut album has a variety of sounds and genres! But most of my songs explore themes about God. God is the most fascinating subject for me because He’s the essence of love and life itself, and there’s no end to mining His mysteries. There’s something new to learn about His beauty every day. Be authentic and your audience will follow. When you are authentic to who you are and your experiences when writing, even if it’s esoteric and way out there, there will always be people who’ll resonate with your art.
