How would you describe your music?
Does anybody remember the 90’s movie Stargate? I feel my music is like entering the spaceship pyramid in Stargate: very contemporary, a little alien, but also ancient, golden and mysterious. It speaks of danger and hope, of light and dark, and it deals with something bigger than ourselves.
Who inspired you to make music dedicated to the planet?
Nature itself I’d say. And the fear of the loss of it. I had been a singer and performer since I was a little girl, and I had been the lead singer of several bands before moving to Los Angeles and deciding to build my whole career around environmental “artivism”. I always wanted to be an artist, but an artist with a clear mission. And the mission found me. I always loved nature and animals deeply, but around 2018, when I started getting more and more informed about climate issues, biodiversity loss, the horrors of factory farming and animal exploitation, it was inevitable for me to decide to use my voice (literally) to speak – and sing – up.
What sets your music apart? What is unique, or at least uncommon?
Not many artists are dedicating absolutely ALL their songs to different environmental and animal rights issues. This is definitely what sets this project apart. The genre is also something I can hardly classify: the mixture of alternative pop and subtle Middle-Eastern influences (due to my passion for belly dancing and Arab rhythms) is surely unique – and uncommon for an Italian living in Los Angeles!
If you could go open a show for any artist, who would it be?
Great question! I’d love to open for Placebo, or Aurora, or my recent discovery Elyanna. Ideally an eco-conscious artist, or someone who has similar soundscapes and atmospheres.
Can you tell us about your new release “Contagious”? What is the song about and what was the concept for the music video?
“Contagious” is an anthem to the positive contagion of ideas, environmental action and love for nature. What if we had a pandemic of environmental activism? There’s so much at stake, and togetherness is the only way forward. The video wants to immerse the viewer even more into Inanna’s world, a cross-cultural and timeless atmosphere, where the dancing, singing and playing with hands symbolizes the “good contagion”, and the power of togetherness in order to create and preserve Beauty.
What is your favourite song to perform?
The latest one, always! I always enjoy the new more than anything else.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
There’s so much power in us, in our daily actions, in the stories we tell ourselves. Every action counts, every movement towards a better relationship with nature and animals makes a difference, even when it’s imperfect. We have the power to change things, and to inspire others to do the same. We have only a few years left to try to avoid a biodiversity and climate collapse, and we must use all our voices, together, to protect the splendour and uniqueness of the Earth’s natural world.
What is next for you?
More “artivist” songs and videos dedicated to nature. As long as nature needs a loud voice, I’ll be singing. I am also planning for an environmental concert with mission-aligned artists, and already developing more climate-related audiovisual projects with my company Better Earth Productions.
If you had a time machine, would you travel to the future or back to the past?
Egypt! I’d travel back to the Ramses II era, or maybe during the reign of queen Hatshepsut.
What would be the ideal food to have cooked for you on a date night?
All kinds of potatoes and focaccias (vegan of course). If you have some gourmet vegan cheese too, you’re already in my inner circle. And something chocolatey is a must.
If you could ask your future self-one question, what would it be?
How do you manage a sanctuary with all these animals AND a music career?
If you could learn any language fluently, what would it be?
Arabic! I just LOVE the sound of it! I started on Duolingo but I have to admit I gave up after a year. Anyone out there who’d like to teach me Arabic?
What would you bring along to an idyllic picnic?
My romantic picnic basket with all my reusable plates and cutlery. I am a big fan of idyllic picnics!
Los Angeles, USA – April 22, 2024
Inanna, the trailblazing pioneer of a new wave of environmentalist and climate music, is set to captivate audiences once again with her latest single “Contagious”, slated for release on Earth Day, April 22, 2024. This new anthem, launched under the London-based record label The Animal Farm, marks a milestone in the realm of eco-conscious music.
“Contagious” praises the transformative power of positive contagion, (subtly drawing a parallel between the adverse spread of a pandemic and the uplifting propagation of ideas, environmental activism and awareness). Inanna’s evocative lyrics and melodious cross-cultural harmonies serve as an inviting rallying cry, urging listeners to embrace the collective responsibility of nurturing our planet, because “there’s too much to lose, and we can’t let them get away with it”.
As the globe prepares to celebrate Earth Day, Inanna’s poignant message resonates deeply, igniting hope and inspiring action. Her songs play an integral part in a growing environmental movement, reinforcing Inanna’s position as the vanguard of “eco-pop”.
Accompanying the release of “Contagious” is a visually stunning music video, scheduled to premiere on Friday, April 26, 2024. Created by Inanna herself and directed by Riley Nichols, the video promises to immerse viewers in a cross-cultural atmosphere, further amplifying the song’s powerful narrative, and reinforcing Inanna’s timeless image.
“Contagious” is a strong call to action, a hopeful invitation, and an anthem to collective activism.
“I wouldn’t be here -writing this kind of music or advocating for nature- if I hadn’t been contagiously inspired by other activists, artists and individuals who are working every day to make a difference. This song is for them, and it is an invitation to never give up. The future of everything we know on Earth is at stake, and the time to act -united beyond all our differences- is now” – says Inanna.
Inanna’s collaboration with The Animal Farm record label underscores her commitment to promote positive change through the universal and powerful language of music. Together, they are redefining the boundaries of what music can be and do, for the present time and for the future of the planet.
