Kaitlyn Myers creates her distinctive sound with influences from the vintage sounds of motown and soul while adding modern beats and rhythms of modern pop. The Philadelphia singer/songwriter and former contestant on The Voice is on her way to NYU this fall to study music and lucky for us she has just released her newest single “Do I Bleed” Her moving lyrics meshed with her sultry voice create a powerful song about feeling numb and questioning one’s humanity.
With a voice reminiscent of Nina Simone and lyrical content packs purpose, Kaitlyn uses music to add her voice to social justice. Her previous single “Star Spangled Revolution,” was a modified interpretation of the American National Anthem to reflect the Black Lives Matter movement that garnered her over a million streams across platforms. “Do I Bleed” is about how we connect to society at large, asking us if we are still human and asking herself, and her listeners, how we’ve changed. With everything that we see in the world today, who do we see when we look in the mirror and do we even recognize who’s looking back.
She tackles this idea that we see so much violence and a constant miscariage of justice that we are numb to it, that we don’t shed tears anymore because it’s been normalized. Simultaneously, we are part of the problem, even if we don’t know it or mean to be, prompting the question “Do I bleed anymore?”
