The Gold Supply is a new, science-fiction, space-zombie-in-a-coma, Nordic-noir, UK-based band that formed amongst the turmoil of the global pandemic and world chaos.

What does your music say about you?

We have a vision of anthemic songs, with big choruses but with a secret dark underside – dark and pessimistic lyrics hidden in a top-40 hit single!  We tend to write quite uplifting soundtracks but then we take a lot of pleasure in twisting it so it becomes a bit scarier.  I think some of that is a response to the last few years we’ve had with Covid, Brexit, War and the financial pressures on everyone. There is a pessimism that runs through us now that I don’t think was there a few years ago.

Have you got a ritual of sorts when writing and thinking about your music?

Weirdly I’ve found that all of our best songs have been written in my head when I’m walking long distances. If I walk more than a few miles with no distractions I always have loads of song ideas and melodies forming in my head. I have no idea why that is but it does mean that if I need some inspiration I know I just need to go for a long walk. It’s actually a bit of a nightmare in the winter, no one wants to be walking for miles in the dark and freezing cold(!) but now it’s become a bit of a ritual.

What about your music is rebellious, unconventional, or unusual?

Our music has a theme of science running through it which feels a bit unconventional right now.  The last few years have seen a general rejection of the science process and I think that’s a shame.  The more I learn about the scientific process and approach, the more beautiful it becomes.

What inspires your writing? Do you draw inspiration from poems, music, TV, or other media?

We’re heavily influenced by TV shows and in particular the Nordic-Noir crime thrillers.  Despite the dark themes of those TV shows, they are all beautifully shot and very cinematic in their approach with fantastic soundtracks.  That same approach has filtered through to us and you can definitely hear that dark and cinematic influence in our music. It’s a big influence on us.

Would you like to collaborate with anyone? If so who and why?

We would collaborate with anyone writing or making a Nordic-Noir film! I think we are the perfect band to create a soundtrack for a dark, bleak crime thriller!  If you listen to our song ‘our last few days from our new Open Lines EP you’ll know exactly what I mean!  It’s beautiful but it’s definitely got a dark side.

Do you enjoy recording and production?

We absolutely love it.  It’s all just so easy now compared to a few years ago.  The technology has moved on so fast that you only need a professional recording studio for the very last phase. All of the writing and pre-production can be done to a really high standard using software that is available to anyone with an iPad or laptop – which is exactly what we did for our Open Lines EP (released in April 2022).  We only actually used about five days of time in a professional studio because so much was able to be done beforehand.

You are a new addition to a crayon box.  What color would you be and why?

Are we allowed to be obvious here and say ‘Gold’?! We’d be your  ‘sparkly gold’ crayon and we would never, ever run out or break.

What was the last TV series you watched on TV?

The last thing I watched was “End of the F**king World” on Netflix which is an old thing but I’ve only discovered recently.  It’s absolutely brilliant and we should have been asked to write the soundtrack for that too!  It fits our music so well!

Would you rather be the one in a movie who gets the hero/heroine or the baddie with all the good lines?

I’d rather be a baddie always. My secret dream is to die in a film. I’d love to be shot or blown up or vaperised in a big budget film.  I don’t even want a speaking part, I just want to be a baddie with a walk-on part and then get obliterated.

Tell us what your ideal partner might look like if you could order one from ‘Partners R Us’.

I think I’m more likely to go with some kind of leasing model so I can change every year

Which are cooler? Dinosaurs or Dragons?

Dinosaurs are cooler. Reality beats fantasy every time.

If you could learn any language fluently what would it be?

There is a song on our new EP called “No Additions” and our singer Lena wrote some of the vocals in Polish and Russian.  We’re now claiming to be the only band to release an English/Polish/Russian song this year!  We should probably get some kind of award for that.  Nobel Peace Prize maybe?
