Brighton-based singer Salt Ashesaka Veiga Sanchez, lover of UK electronic music, burst into the dance music scene with her signature dark songs and melodies with a zeitgeist club sound, all of which were inspired by Giorgio Moroder’s blend of disco and epic dark atmospheres.

Salt Ashes burst into the dance music scene with her first full self-titled debut album in 2016, produced by the late Daniel Fridholm (AKA Cruelty), which quickly gained popularity with music fans worldwide. She became renowned for her signature dark songs and melodies with a zeitgeist club sound, many of which were inspired by Giorgio Moroder’s blend of disco and epic dark atmospheres.

She has since released a string of successful singles, including “Girls,” “Go All Out,” and “Totally Faking”. She kicked off 2019 with a live performance and Q&A at Apple’s flagship store in London, where she also debuted the music video for her single “Don’t”. In 2020, she released her debut EP counting crosses; her most dynamic collection of songs yet, as well as standalone single, “Cut You With A Kiss,” a song she says is about “questioning the integrity of someone’s new girlfriend and believing that she isn’t good for them.” That single reached #19 on the UK iTunes Pop Single Chart and #40 on the iTunes Overall Singles chart. She’s currently working on her sophomore album which is planned for later this year.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

I would call it a heartache disco because I always write sad or dark songs but usually, you’ll want to dance to them.

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

Lady Gaga. What a show that would be.

Are you creative in other disciplines?

I am, I direct a lot of my own music videos and have styled some of them as well as choreographing dance pieces and occasionally doing some art.

How do you go about writing a song? Do you have a melody in your head and then write the other music for it?

Quite often I’ll start with some chords and then hum a tune around them… I might adapt the chords as I go along to fit better with what I’m singing. From there I either write the lyrics or start the production and do them simultaneously. I like how my process isn’t always the same as it keeps things interesting.

What would you be doing right now if it weren’t for your music career?

Probably managing other artists! It would still be within the industry for sure. Maybe running my own label or management company.

What was the last TV series you watched on TV?

Squid Game like everyone in the world! I haven’t finished it yet though but loving it.

What was the last thing you dressed up as for fancy dress?

A voodoo witch for Halloween last year. I love Halloween so I’m looking forward to this year.

What would be the ideal food to have cooked for you on a date night?

Anything Japanese. I love sushi!

If you had to describe yourself as a flavor, what would it be?

Salt and sweet like the mixed popcorn you get.

Which fictional character do you wish was real?

Thor… He’s hot and strong, right?
