Since bursting out of the gate with 2017’s ‘Control Freak’ EP, the group have been defying the odds by self-releasing a stream of chart-topping singles that have made them a mainstay on Canadian alternative radio and online.
Having announced their highly anticipated, Dave Schiffman (Vampire Weekend, Pup) produced, new album Tunnel Vision for release in the fall of 2022, the band have been giving audiences a taste of what’s to come with a string of releases planned over the coming months. With the industrial-infused first single “CTRL^^^” in its 5th week in the Top 10 at Canadian alt radio, MONOWHALES are taking things to a new level with their latest offering “StuckintheMiddle”. With a growing reputation in the indie rock world as a band that deliver big sounds with equal parts creative musicianship and youthful energy, there is no doubt that with more music planned for release this year, MONOWHALES are set to tear a new space in the UK scene.
How would you describe the music?
Fun, thoughtful and playfully dark. We have a lot of feelings we like to express, but we also have a good time expressing them live in a room with you. Music is always about connecting. Love to be present in connecting with each other.
What is the one message you’d want to give to your fans?
Your uniqueness is your biggest strength. Throw away your fears and do what you want to in this/your life.
What is your favourite song to perform?
This always changes but at the moment “CTRL^^^” it’s a very fun one and gets the crowd headbanging which is always a great feeling in the room together!
How do you go about writing a song?
It’s always different, don’t think we want to ever lock in one way of writing. It’s good to have an open field of creativity. Sometimes we start from scratch in a room together, other times one or two of us might have some ideas we bring to the group to work on. Keepin’ it limitless is where it is at though.
What do you enjoy most about being in a band?
Playing shows and seeing the crowd enjoy themselves. Expressing our inner life experiences and outputting them into art. The fast-paced spontaneous chaos of it all is a thrill we all enjoy or we couldn’t do this.
Do you have any superstitions?
Ah it’s one of those things that if I try not to think or talk about it out loud, then it’s not real…right?
If you were talking to your younger self, what advice would you give yourself?
Be kind to your mind and your body. It’s all connected and you only have this one. Take care of it.
Do you sing in the shower? What songs?
Yes absolutely. It’s always changing, to be honest, but I find that reoccurring in the shower singing catalogue is Ray Charles….
Don’t know why, just is.
What fictional character do you wish was real?
Gandalf.
Which are cooler, Dinosaurs or Dragons?
Heartbreaker of a question. Aren’t they one and the same? The only difference is one breathes fire? But do we really know for SURE that flying dinos couldn’t breathe some kind of fire?… My child-heart thinks Dinos are cooler but does this mean that as you get older dinosaurs lose their street cred and they NEED more to be cool? That’s where the Dragons become the cool guys on the street? I don’t know, there is so much more to explore in the field of dinosaurs before moving on to the fantasy of dragons. You’ve really stumped me here. Why I specifically wrote the most about this question probably says a lot. This one really hits, you know?
