Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Kyle started experimenting with production on his laptop when he was 16 years old. He’s always been into technology and audio, so the intricacy of making music was always something that was ingrained in him. At 17 years old, he built his own studio from the ground up, working with and creating beats for other artists.
How would you describe your music?
A dark, cinematic blend of hip hop and R&B
How do you go about writing a song? Do you have a melody in your head and then write the other music for it?
Sometimes, it really depends. I don’t really have a set process I go through when creating. I may make a beat and write in my head as I make it or have a hook stuck in my head I have to put to an instrumental. It’s really whatever hits me first.
If we were to look at the artists you are listening to, who would be on your playlist?
I been vibing lately, listening to a lot of Lucky Daye and Devin Tracy. Always got Frank Ocean & Mac Miller in rotation too tho.
If we were to peek over your shoulder, what does your studio look like? What gear do you typically use?
I think it looks Sci-fi like; everyone says it looks like a spaceship. I obviously got a mic and monitors and all that but what I do have that I don’t think a lot of people will is a motorized desk for standing or sitting. I love standing and creating, it oddly changes it up a lot especially when creating with a bunch of people. And watching it go up and down is satisfying.
Does your music fit into your local scene? If so, how do you take advantage of that? If not, do you see that as an obstacle and what do you do about it?
Definitely not the Detroit style. I don’t really see that as an obstacle, in ways it’s actually been an advantage. People tend to expect you to sound like your city and when you don’t, they get intrigued. At that point it’s up to you to impress them.
What do you think the greatest invention has been?
Cheesecake. No question. Whoever did that need a check bigger than Bezos.
You are a new addition to a crayon box. What colour would you be and why?
I would be a dark blue, and it would be called “is that black?” because I’m colourblind and cannot see dark blue. It’s just black.
What was the last TV series you watched on TV?
Squid Game, I don’t really have the time to binge shows but I am glad I did with Squid Game. 10/10 would recommend.
Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?
Morgan Freeman, just because that would be hilarious, and I think he would do a great job.
Are you a valuable asset on a Pub Quiz team?
Oh, for sure, I know too many random facts about random things. I would definitely be on the roster.
Kyle shares his intoxicating new single ‘No Attachment’, out now on all streaming platforms.
Naming 6LACK, PARTYNEXTDOOR and The Weeknd as the biggest inspirations for this track, Kyle draws from his combined influences and seamlessly blends elements of Hiphop, Soul and dark R&B, owning his completely distinctive sound.
On the track, Kyle sings about a woman who only likes to be chased rather than tied to an attachment that comes with feelings and love. The whole concept came to Kyle one night at 3am, where upon hearing the beat, he envisioned a chase that clearly comes across in the pace of the beat and the lyrics.
Kyle wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered the track independently. Speaking of the track, he says, “I pictured a chase of some sort, so I wanted it to sound like that. Like you’re running from something. In terms of the production, I do it all myself, none of it is outsourced. From the music to the visuals and cover art, I do it all myself and I try to put a good little spin on it for anyone who listens or watches. No other hands or eyes ever touch it.”
