Born to a Martinican father and a Belgo-Congolese mother, K.ZIA was raised amongst many cultures and has traveled the world of Music and Circus, during her childhood and teenage life. In 2017, while finishing her Master’s in Public Relations and Media she decided to move to Berlin where she started her career as an Independent Artist. Since her debut EP ‘RED“ released in 2018, K.ZIA has performed across the globe as both a headliner and support act for artists like Sampa The Great, Omar Lyefook, Tayla Parx, Kota the friend and more.

She describes herself as an Afro-European mineral by virtue of her cultural and ethnic background. This can be felt in her music mixing both French and English. She creates soundscapes fusing cultures, and genres and brings people together to celebrate music, LOVE by creating a safe space for us to be.

Who inspired you to make music?

I guess my mother would be the first inspiration for that. She’s my ma, the first woman I identified with…and she’s a singer. From there it was only add ons 🙂

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

It enables artists to communicate directly with their fans. To have direct feedback and connection with the people we create for and with… It enables us to be inspired by so many things we wouldn’t normally be able to see because no access or no reason to… it allows artists to do their own thing without having to go through Media or record labels .. there is no gate whatsoever between the creator and consumer…

But at the same time, it’s a heavy heavy burden. All these numbers, likes, followers and constant constant need of producing more and more content lead us to create in a “fast food” way sometimes.

We create songs that must be under three minutes to fit that fast consumption mode we are in because of the internet’s pace.

I feel like some moments like “oH I feel like writing a song” became “Oh i need to create content to post”.. I feel like some creative decisions are biased now…

Have you got a ritual of sorts when writing and thinking about your music?

Music and its connected art forms are like therapy to me. I use it to reflect and exteriorize my inner thoughts and emotions.

My inner purpose also had a big part in pushing me to do what I do. I feel like I’m here to share my emotional and personal journey to help people who may be going through similar struggles/feelings. The core need is really a translation of emotion, not because I dreamt it or saw it, but because I felt it.

How would you describe your music?

Emotional and true.

What’s next for you?

Growth as a human and artist, more collaborations and hopefully lots of traveling to perform!

What are your top two favorite songs of all time? Why those songs?

It’s such a hard question to answer. I really can’t it depends on my mood, my age and what I’m judging it for… musicality, emotions, composition?

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY of Queen for instance is a really inspiring masterpiece to me. Forever one of the greatest songs I’ve heard…But there are many songs I listen to a lot more often.

You should let me love you of Mario – I’ve listened and sung that song sooooo many times. It’s not as a genius in its creativity but it speaks to my heart and is a translation of my whole teenage years, I love it!

But if I am asked that same question in another interview it’ll probably be two other songs…

But that doesn’t mean I don’t actually value them Like I say I do.

What was the last series you watched on TV?

I don’t watch TV. I Like to choose the content I am fed as much as possible so I go with Netflix. The last series I watched was LUPIN this french show with Omar Sy.. it was cute, def go hooked, hope there’s more coming 😀

What do you think the greatest invention has been?

Funny question, my first thought was the wheel, my second the lightbulb.

Do you have any lucky items, objects, or traditions?

I’ve traveled a lot and have been traveling a lot since I’m a child.

The one tradition I have to always feel at home whenever I move is to take my comfort toy along….. ok that sounded different in my head.  My cuddle toy? haha… It’s a small stuffed donkey that My dad got me when I moved to the states when I was six years old.

Still brings my comfort to this day.

If you could ask your future self one question, what would it be?

Where shall I invest my/more time?

If you had to describe yourself as a flavor, what would it be?

A Salted butter french Pastry with mango….Oh yessss.
