We are delighted to welcome Lauren Jaimes to Divine Magazine. Lauren Jaimes (pronounced James) is not your typical country music artist. Her sound, which has roots in Country, Folk, and Americana, evokes a dreamy vintage western vibe that is reflective of some of her favorite influences, including Kacey Musgraves and Johnny Cash.
What first got you into music?
My Dad first got me into music! My parents were missionaries in South America before I was born and they played music all across the continent. When I was about 10 he gave me my first guitar, and the rest is history!
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
As a musician and a writer, I love to tell stories. Because of this, I lean toward making music that lives in the Country and Folk genres. I view these genres as being authentic and honest, and because of this I really gravitate toward them. The “three chords and the truth” adage is right up my alley, and I try to write lyrics that are going to resonate with the audience and feel relatable.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
This is always a fun question! I’d like to imagine that in a past life I would’ve worked with Johnny Cash or Roy Orbison. But it would also be a dream come true to collaborate with Don McLean, Kacey Musgraves, or Dolly Parton.
Are you finding the isolation of the pandemic conducive to your writing or is it hindering the experiences you can write about?
This past year has been really tough on all of us, and I have found that my productivity goes through fluctuations. Sometimes I’m really motivated and sometimes I just don’t feel like doing anything at all. I’ve certainly had more time to write and have been able to meet some awesome new co-writers online, but I’ve also had days where I just want to stay in bed. It’s hard not having that in-person human connection and not being able to just go out and feel safe. I actually wrote a song about this during quarantine. It’s called The Highs & The Lows, and I can’t wait to record it soon! While the pandemic has definitely taken a toll on mental health, I keep trying to stay positive, productive and busy! We’ll all be together again soon 🙂
If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
I would love to open for Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Kelsea Ballerini, or Margo Price. They are are all such talented artists and on top of that, they all seem like really awesome people!
If you could be a superhero, what would your superpower be and your superhero name?
I have always wanted to be able to either heal, like Lucy in Chronicles of Narnia, or fly, like Wonder Woman. Maybe my superhero name could be the Healing Cosmic Cowgirl haha. Or maybe someone else could name me…
What fictional character do you wish was real?
The Fairy Godmother in Cinderella!
What’s your most expensive piece of clothing?
I think the boots I wore in the “Home Is Where You Are” music video might be the most expensive piece of clothing I own. I currently keep them in a box under my bed because I’m scared to wear them outside haha. I am getting married though next year, so as soon as I pick out a wedding dress I will definitely have a new “most expensive” article in my wardrobe.
If you could learn any language fluently what would it be?
I am in love with French fashion and have always wanted to travel to Paris, so I have to go with French.
If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself?
Honestly?….buy Bitcoin! Haha. But if we’re talking music, I would tell my younger self to not be afraid to do what you love. It took me a long time to decide to pursue music, and while I wish I had started sooner, I’m so glad that I am finally living my dream!
Lauren is back with a new single, “Tell Me Something Good”. This song pairs a simple piano ballad with bright vocals and lyrically echoes a common sentiment in our society today: This past year has been hard and we just need some good news. It contemplates finding meaning and purpose in life with thoughtful and honest reflections. As a songwriter, Lauren Jaimes is acknowledging the helplessness behind what we cannot control, and touching on the human need to maintain hope and optimism in a world that can sometimes seem overwhelming.
