Catchfiyah is an electronic duo based out of Toronto, Ontario, consisting of Lauren Barnett and Demetrios Petsalakis.

Blending world beats with house and EDM, they weave social commentary with creative storytelling and hypnotic rhythms. Their new track, “Now I Don’t Mind,” is a high energy, melodic dance track that discusses the ability to find your voice and stand up for yourself by taking ownership of your choices — regardless of how others may feel about them.

Which famous musician do you admire?

Wayne Shorter is one of the musicians we admire. He is an amazing composer and saxophonist and has always been searching for new ways to express music and push sonic boundaries.

How would you describe your music?

Catchfiyah likes to bring together live instrument performance and contemporary electronic production techniques.

What do you enjoy most about being an artist?

There are many things I enjoy about being an artist. The thing I enjoy the most is that you are constantly in new environments meeting new interesting people and that makes life fun.

Do you enjoy recording and production?

We love recording and producing music. It is the time where we get to refine our ideas and create a snapshot of where we are creatively at that point in time.

What is your favourite song to perform?

Our favourite song to perform is Now I Don’t Mind, which is the single off our latest album. It is upbeat and groovy and always gets the audience dancing! The lyrics are angsty, uplifting and repetitive which can be cathartic to perform.

If you were talking to a younger version of yourself, what advice would you give?

Do things you love, and the money will come.

Which are cooler dinosaurs or dragons?

Obviously, dragons because they breathe fire!

Which fiction character do you wish was real?

Hagrid. Cool dude with cool animals! Also, he has a flying motorcycle.

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

Definitely! Singing or humming depending on the time of day. Songs are always floating around in our brains! Usually, they are melodies that we are rehearsing with our band or other bands that we play with.

What was the last TV series you watched on TV?

The last TV series we watched was Squid Game! It was intense and awesome; we would highly recommend it!
