For over 20 years, Cash Crawford has been involved in the music industry as a noteworthy vocalist, songwriter, and entertainer. Growing up in a rural area of Pritchard, Canada, Cash and her sister Sadie would sing every chance they got, even if it was walking down their driveway to the bus, or going to church on Sunday.
In 2008, Cash participated in Canadian Idol, making it to the third round just before being televised. After Canadian Idol, Cash went on to travel across Canada performing as one half of the duo ‘Beyond the Mountain’ with Theo Tams. This project won her the Toronto Independent Music Awards for Singer/Songwriter of the Year in 2012. During this time, Cash also worked as a voice actor and wrote solo music. Her original projects have earned her Rising Star, Female Vocalist of the Year, and Song of the Year nominations. Since moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 2016, she continues to hone her skills both on and off the stage. In 2019, Cash released “Stevie”, her single written about her idol Stevie Nicks, with David Tolliver. Most recently, she has been working with producer Don Miggs in Nashville, TN. What about your music is rebellious, unconventional, or unusual?
I think my music is “Rebellious, unconventional, or unusual” in the sense that I do it for myself first. Art is an expression of self and I think it’s important to get out what you need to express first and foremost instead of trying to “Fit in with the cool kids.” It’s much cooler to be uncool.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
My dream collaborators would be John Mayer, Chris Stapleton, Alicia Keys, Adele, or H.E.R. I think all 5 of those artists are very strong in who they are as artists and they all bring so much soul and life experience to the table… I would be honored if they would let me be a part of some of their magic.
If you could open a show for any artist who would it be?
I would also love to open a show for any of those artists in question two. As someone who is new in the touring world, I feel like I would be able to learn some very valuable things from each of them.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
One important message I would love to send out to any of my fans is that there is time and space for you to come as you are. You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be ready. Spend the time honing your skills and know that you can STILL START that honing process at 70. You are never too old or young and you should always be authentic and true to yourself.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
If I could change anything about the industry it would be the stigma that you need to look a certain way, be a certain age, or have a certain sound. Art shouldn’t be put in those kinds of boxes nor should the creators of said art. And If I had my way… there would be much more value placed on artists and less on the corporations. Art is essential to life.
Have you written songs for any other artists?
I’ve had the pleasure of lending my voice to other artists as well as writing on a few songs. I love doing collaborations because it pushes you out of your comfort zone and helps me see a different perspective that I may not have seen otherwise.
Are you planning any videos for your music?
I’m in the process of getting a video done for “Save Myself” very soon… which is super exciting and I’m hoping to be able to tour and do some festival circuits in the near future as well!
Was anyone else involved in the writing, recording, or producing of the songs?
For this particular track, I created it with John Luzzi and Don Miggs. Those guys have become my dream team. They come to the studio with great ideas and they give me a safe space to be vulnerable and really lay everything out on the table during the writing process. I can’t wait to work with them again.
Do you sing in the shower? What songs?
I DO sing in the shower. I mostly practice vocal runs unless I have a playlist on and then I sing along to what I’m listening to.
What fictional character do you wish was real?
The fictional character I wish was real…. STERLING ARCHER. I’d date the shit out of him.
If you were a member of the Spice Girls, what would your spice handle be?
If I were a Spice Girl, I’d be Spiritual Spice… I’d burn incense and give out crystals and enograce people to go to therapy. I kinda do that now!!
What was the last TV series you watched?
The last TV series I watched was Only Murders in the Building on Hulu. Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin all together are so ironically funny. I can’t wait for season two.
If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself?
If I was talking to a younger version of me… I’d tell her to stop rushing things. I’m learning more and more that divine timing happens right when it should and you don’t need to force anything. Also… GIRL… focus on you first. You need to be strong in who you are if you want that job/relationship/friendship/new city to work out for you.
