There is a lot of joy associated with proposals and for a good reason. The questions of Will They? Won’t They? are finally put to bed, and true love triumphs once again. For those doing the proposing, though, it can be stressful. You need to find the right time, the right place, and make sure that everything leading up to it is perfect.

Sure, you could go the traditional route. Treat your partner to dinner, take a stroll by the river, get down on one knee, and pop the question is something that works. But not everyone wants the traditional, and with such a vast potential for creativity, you may as well go all out.

Even if you’ve not yet bought the ring, it’s never too early to plan the perfect proposal for the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, but if you’re struggling for ideas, here are four creative options to consider.

X Marks the Spot

If you’ve got a partner who loves solving puzzles, then creating a treasure map for them to work out is something that will keep them busy all day and give them heaps of memories to recall from it.

You can stay small by designing the hunt around your home or neighborhood, or you can go big by tracing every step of your relationship and hiding little clues around places you’ve been since you were together.

Some of these might be places that they don’t remember, which will give them an overflowing of nostalgia when they finally realize why they’re there and will show how much your time together means to you. If possible, you can also ask a friend or relative to follow at a distance to get the perfect photograph at the final stop.

The Story of Your Lives

For the book lovers, what better way to pop the question by recreating the story of your relationship and gifting your partner a book. You can write something short that details all the best moments of your relationship, making it as subtle or overt as you like.

If you’re not much of a writer, there are ghostwriting services available that you can contact with your plot and ask them to do the technical bits. This gives you a chance to focus on making sure everything is perfect, but it might be better for it to come from your hand, regardless of how well you can string a sentence together.

You can decide whether you want a book that can hide engagement rings or wait for them to get to the end and make your proposal yourself. Whichever you choose, it’s sure to be a better ending than what we’ll get from Game of Thrones.

Top of the World

Those who enjoy seeing the vast expanse of nature and getting away from the hustle and bustle of regular city living can indulge their future fiance by proposing as high up as you can go.

Where you go will depend on the type of couple you are. If you are those who love to ski or snowboard, then a proposal at the top of the highest Double Black Diamond in the resort will be perfect (and give you a quick getaway if they turn you down. Just kidding). Other options include the summit of a hike where you’re catching the sunset before heading back down.

The possibilities are endless, and for those who love all-things great outdoors, it gives you the chance to indulge in your favorite pastime (so that they’ll be none the wiser) while also checking something off your list of things to do.

The Prince/ss in the Castle

Gamers of all kinds love to spend their hours trying to beat that one level before allowing themselves to go to bed, and your game-loving future-fiance will likely do just the same when you ask them to level up with you.

In the past, tech-savvy proposers have made their own game, but much like writing a book, this isn’t something everybody can do, at least not well. Instead, you can consider their favorite game and adapt the proposal to that.

Whether it’s speeding by on a Mario Kart and hitting them with the blue shell of Will You Marry Me? or activating the Halo Rings as your means of the proposal, they will enjoy the time and effort that’s gone into your proposal and give you both a checkpoint to look back on later.

The Fun Has Only Just Begun

Creative proposals might not be for everybody, but if you want to go above and beyond and make your proposal that your future spouse will love to tell everybody about, then taking inspiration from some of these ideas is the first step towards a happy, long life you’ll live together.
