Psychedelic/soul group, Cousin Mouth has released a haunting new video for their single, “New Memories,” an introspective story of facing your past, present, and future. The soulful and smooth track is about learning to overcome past experiences and use them to find inner peace. This is their first single off of their upcoming album, MayflowerPeacemakerHolyredeemer via Feeder Loft Records.
Cousin Mouth is a Detroit-based psychedelic R&B group led by songwriter and producer Alex Burns. Directed by Zach Hagy, the music video starts with a groovy guitar intro that shows songwriter and producer, Alex Burns driving through different parts of town, curiously passing by different versions of himself. Through his inward-looking journey Burns shows how past experiences, selves, and relationships we all live with weigh on the present versions of ourselves. “This song is some of my reflections on how we confront and coexist with the past and how it affects our present and future,” says Burns. He eventually is face to face with himself and “The Muses,” who are played by background vocalists Supercoolwicked (Morgan Hutson) and Salakastar (Aja Dier).
The tone of Cousin Mouth’s upcoming album, MayflowerPeacemakerHolyredeemer, reflects their signature groove, beat-based style mixed with a psychedelic-dreamy sound. This is their second studio album following their 2018 debut album, Medusa, released by Detroit record shop and label Paramita Sound. Cousin Mouth leads listeners on an introspective journey to make peace with their past with this serene and soothing new single. “This theme of inevitable conflict within oneself leading to harmony (or not) is one of the broader themes both lyrically and musically in the record,” says Burns. The music video embodies the pensive and brooding tone of the single and is the perfect combination for this reflective adventure.
