Merlot Embargo’s “It Could Be Worse” is an indie pop song that is both playful and thought-provoking. With a lighthearted sound reminiscent of Paramore, American Authors, or Foster the People, the song manages to address a common issue that has become increasingly relevant during the pandemic.

The duo’s inspiration for the song came from the phrase “it could be worse,” which they felt was being used by some people to downplay the very real and serious issues facing society today, such as Covid and systemic racism. According to Merlot Embargo, the phrase has become a way for some to avoid feeling empathy for others and to justify their lack of action.

Despite the serious message behind the song, Merlot Embargo manages to keep the tone upbeat and catchy. Their different approaches to music, and life, complement each other well and result in a sound that is both provocative and approachable. “It Could Be Worse” is a testament to the duo’s ability to create music that is both entertaining and meaningful.

Merlot Embargo’s journey to making music is a story in itself. A nearly fatal car accident that crushed their car and sent them scrambling out the newly-destroyed rear window served as a wake-up call for the duo. The experience led them to share their music with the world, and their blending of different approaches to music has resulted in a unique sound that is all their own.

“It Could Be Worse” is an enjoyable and thought-provoking indie pop song that showcases Merlot Embargo’s talent as musicians and songwriters.

I fell in love with music when I first picked up a guitar at age 8. When I played, my friends and family would smile and spill with joy over the music I played, even though it was never Grammy quality. While my music career never made it past high school, my love for music never waivered. I loved the feeling of bringing a smile to someone's face through music and wanted to keep that passion going. So, I took it upon myself to continue to support and promote artists by writing about their music. This way, I can support my personal passion for music and bring entertain and joy to others through music.  Outside my love for music, I do enjoy a good hike and being in the outdoors. My favorite place that I've hiked is in Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah. I love to travel too. I've been to Costa Rica, Vancouver, BC, and England, but the best place by far is Germany on Oktoberfest. I liken that experience to being in New Orleans on Mardi Gras. I like a good book now and then, but I'm more of a streaming fiend. I live for crime docuseries on Netflix, veterinary shows on National Geographic, and re-watching Scrubs on Hulu.
