With more employees now working from home, many of them are wondering how they can improve their work routine and make it more pleasant and less stressful. Below, are five tips on how to have a better work-from-home experience.

Create a work routine you can stick to

Since there’s no one to supervise your work and there’s no structure, you may see yourself slacking off while working from home. This is where an effective work routine comes in.

For starters, try getting up at the same time every day and getting out of your pajamas. Enjoy your breakfast and avoid going online before the time comes to log in. Use the time you’d spend commuting to work for light activities such as reading, listening to music, or exercising. After getting all the work done, give yourself some downtime, but make sure to go to bed at the same time each night to remain consistent with your routine.

Set up an efficient workspace at home

This is the single most important thing you can do to be able to work from home more effectively. Preferably, your workspace will be tucked away from other people and distractions. Set everything up so you’re feeling comfortable and make sure you have all the necessary tools before you start.

As for the place itself, some people may require a dedicated room or a corner to set up their workstations. Others, on the other hand, may prefer to take their work outside, in their garden or a patio, especially during the summer. Take regular breaks

While you should strive to make your working environment pleasant and comfortable to be able to survive working from home, working long hours in a comfortable position without really taking any breaks isn’t going to cut it. In fact, the longer you work without taking a break, the more likely you are to see your productivity levels dropping. It’s much better to get away from the screen for a while, even if it’s just for 5-10 minutes.

Shifting your attention to something else for a little while will give your mind enough time to refresh so you’ll be able to think more clearly. Remember to schedule regular breaks in between the tasks and use your free time to go for a walk, run on fresh air, do some light stretching, or tackle a short workout.

Set boundaries

When working from home, it can be easy to let your workdays impact your personal life. The boundaries between work life and home life become blurred, causing you to feel like you’re never truly done for the day and that you never really get back home from work.

Aside from creating a dedicated spot for getting all your work done (whether that’s indoors or outdoors), you also want to let everyone else know when you are and aren’t available. Talk to your friends and family about this and make it clear that you’re off-limits during certain hours. Not only will this enable you to focus better on your work and save you from some common work-from-home traps, but you’ll also be less likely to get stuck in work mode for the rest of the day.

Take care of yourself

Whether you’ve been working from home for years or months or have just recently started with the regime as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, taking good care of yourself is essential for preserving your mental health.

If you’re new to working from home, keep in mind that even though this may not feel normal and you might see your productivity levels decline, being kind to yourself is crucial during these difficult times. Be realistic about what you can and can’t achieve and make sure to relax after your workday as this is crucial for staying sane while working from home. Remember, you’re doing the best that you can given the circumstances, so cut yourself some slack.
