Chet Lam is back with his 10th studio album, Back to the Stars Again, out now. This is his second album in the English language, following the 2006 release of “Camping.” Back to the Stars Again is also available in Mandarin, which you can hear here.
Back to the Stars Again is based on the story from the book The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupéry, and performed entirely by Chet. An outstanding musician and singer-songwriter, Chet was born in Hong Kong and now resides in Dublin, Ireland.
His latest album explores the characters of the book The Little Prince, which include the prince, the fox, the rose, the snake and the pilot. All of these colorful characters provide Lam with a way to give new meaning to themes of love, friendship, and life together with his own perspective of living in a different country from his birth country, but equally calling it home.
“I was always fascinated by the simplicity and the depth of the French classic story. I wrote these songs from the perspective of each character. The Little Prince is a romantic of course, The Fox is simple a drama queen, The Rose is spoiled, the Ghosts are actually everyday life people, The Snake is actually innocent … all characters coming together will be a life lived to the fullest.”
The listener may be reminded of Simon and Garfunkel or James Taylor, when listening to this charming album of songs. Lam’s vocals are perfectly complemented by the folk instrumentals and each song explores a different character from the book in a way that is musically sound and mood setting.
Lam has been a multi instrumentalist, singer-songwriter for decades, breaking through with his single “The Best Is Yet To Come” in 2003. It’s an intimate performance featuring his pristine vocals delicately accompanied by guitar. The song’s hopeful message made it a rousing anthem of resilience during Hong Kong’s SARS virus outbreak.
“I wrote that after a breakup, and it sort of accidentally became successful,” he says. “It seems that it helped people going through a hard time—songs really have a lot of power to do good.”
His romantic ballad “By My Side,” a song he wrote for an ex-lover, became the centerpiece of iconic Chinese Romcom Turn Left, Turn Right (2003). Other standouts in Chet’s robust song catalog include the stunning piano ballad “For Leif,” and the sweet and smoky adult-pop song, “Puppy Love.”
He has written national pop hits in Hong Kong for nationally acclaimed artists like Eason Chan, Stephanie Sun, Dadawa, Gigi Leung and more.
Lam has been performing professionally since he was only ten years old, and featured in drama series on television as well as performing in commercial songs.
His unique style of Asian fusion pop is sure to keep new and existing fans entertained.
