Living as a digital nomad gives you the freedom to travel the world and not have to worry about earning money. It allows you to get up when you want, not even get out of your pyjamas and work to your heart’s content in some of the most beautiful places in the world.

It is a lifestyle that has been adopted by many tech-savvy individuals who has denounced the idea of an office job as something that belongs in the 21st Century. More and more people every day are dismissing the traditional workplace environment and are instead searching for opportunities to explore the world while maintaining their bank account.

It is cause for jealousy among some. However, while it is refreshing to work at your own pace wherever you are in the world, you can also encounter some problems that you may not have initially anticipated that can lead to issues further down the line.

Mail Fail

If you are on the other side of the world, then you don’t think about physical credit card bills or political appeals for your vote. You’re out of the country, and all of that can be done online now, anyway.

But what about when you need important documents sent to you, such as voting by proxy, or perhaps receiving essential updates about your doctor’s surgery? Many people have no choice but to miss out on these opportunities due to having nowhere the mail can be sent to, and so you run the risk of not having a say in anything back home anymore.

However, help is at hand. Investing in an internet PO box will allow you to receive mail and keep you connected to all the goings on back home. This includes any postcards or wedding invites from friends who are wondering if you’ve fallen off the face of the earth. Using such a service will bring you back home without having to go anywhere, so you never miss out on an event again.

Meetings and Greetings

As someone who has a hectic schedule, it can be a challenge to organise a time with someone to set up a meeting. This is particularly true if you work in different time zones and means one of you may have to stay up well past bedtime.

That being said, using online video messaging services like Skype will hopefully make the transition easier, especially with the consistent updates that allow more and more people onto a call.

There is no need to find a conference room anymore. Your vital business meetings or interviews can take place anywhere, anytime, and will help you close that sale before the clock strikes midnight somewhere in the world.

Why-Fi?

Every digital nomad will have experienced poor-to-absolutely-dire wifi at some point in their careers. It’s a struggle to think of anything worse, especially if you have a deadline or meeting to attend (remotely, of course).

Ensuring that you have a backup plan in case of such wifi disasters will saver you a lot of stress and worry whenever it does hit you – and it will, eventually. Scoping out a nearby coffee shop or location that lets you stay as long as you pay will ease much of these worries.

Furthermore, investing in reliable internet connection like Spectrum internet should be top of your priorities. You might not think about it until it happens, especially if you are in a coworking space. Too many connections can throttle the speed and cause downtime, so getting the best deal for a fair price will save you any headaches later.

Future Not So Perfect

Those who live on the gust of the wind, going wherever life takes them are often considered to not have a real job. Talking with people who have only known the office lifestyle may not entirely understand what it is that you do, and so will bombard you with questions about the future.

But that is the problem for many digital nomads. You don’t think about the future; not too far in advance anyway, as circumstances are always subject to change. The whole reason you adopted this lifestyle was so that you aren’t tied down to any one location, and that any potential anchoring does not impact on what you want to do.

This isn’t always considered an acceptable answer, though. So what is the solution? There isn’t one, really, instead of continuing to do what you want to do and not let anyone tell you otherwise. While your future may seem uncertain, it is the present you are concerned with, so just keep living in the moment and let the future sort itself out.

The problems of a digital nomad are things that some people just don’t understand. But whatever. As long as you have backup plans to solving any potential issues that might arise, then there is no reason to change anything at all. Keep on keepin’ on, and enjoy the world while you still can.
