Who inspired you to make music?

I was inspired by various family members: My mum used to sing melancholic ballads to me as a child, and my dad gave me my first guitar. I also have three uncles, Phil, John and Vincent, who I remember being bands when I was growing up, and I have memories of them jamming with guitars and harmonicas. My Uncle Phil, who is 66 years old, is still gigging down in Bathurst.

If you could go open a show for any artist, who would it be?

I’d love to open for Bernard Fanning. Powderfinger was a great influence over me growing up and I often tried to replicate (unsuccessfully) the way Bernard sang. His voice is beautiful.

What would you be doing right now if it weren’t for your music career?

My music ‘career’ doesn’t pay my bills, so I work in aged care. To be honest though, my joy in life comes from making music, so I’m happy to work any job that gives the money and time I need to have the freedom to make music and not feel the pressure to make music pay my way.

What about your music is rebellious, unconventional, or unusual?

I think the thing that sets me apart is that I’m very comfortable in my own skin. I happily make the music that I want and will swap between various music personas in order to match the mood I’m in, did I mention I also perform under a different moniker as an electro-pop artist and I also have a punk/grunge band on the side. I’d probably say the most rebellious thing about me is that I am very anti-capitalist and believe that music, art and creativity belongs to everyone for us all to share and enjoy freely.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

I think the internet and various digital technologies have increased the accessibility of music to more people, and as such, the ‘competition’ is at an all time high, making it very difficult, if not impossible for most people to sustain a living from making music. But whilst the commercial viability of music is possibly waning, more and more people can create music, which means that more people get to enjoy the self-expression and joy of crafting their own tunes, and that’s positive.

In your opinion, how do artists in this industry stay on top of the game when faced with so much competition? What is the secret to making yourself noticed?

I think you must learn to let that go and instead focus on the joy you get from making music. If you don’t love it, don’t do it. I think people easily lose sight of the pleasure they get from making music and instead become absorbed with trying to get rich or famous or popular, and I don’t think striving for those things ever brings out the best in anyone, nor does it foster good mental health or a supportive and inspiring community. Sure, try new things, try to do something different and strive to be the best, but make sure that whatever you’re doing, it is bringing you joy and it’s helping you be the best you, you can be.

What is the most useless talent you have?

I make excellent pancakes.

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

Of course. Mostly songs from Disney Musicals: ‘Friend Like Me’ from Aladdin is getting a good working over of late.

If you were to write an autobiography, what would the title be?

‘Things to do whilst you’re waiting to die.’

Do you have a cherished childhood teddy bear or other stuffed animal sitting on your bed at home?

Yes. His name is simply ‘bear’ and he was handed down to me from my mother, and I handed him down to my daughter. Sadly, dust mites and rodents got to him a few years back, so he’s looking pretty worse for wear, but someone did do a bit of patch up job on him, so he’s still got life in him yet.

Are you a valuable asset on a Pub Quiz team?

Very much so. In fact, a work colleague of mine in Perth tried to convince our manager that I needed to do a stint on the West Coast, so just that I’d be available to join their table for Trivia Night.
