What first got you into music?
My older brother is the one who originally introduced me to music. I grew up watching his classic rock cover band, starting when he was in middle school and I was in elementary. I would get into bars he was playing at to watch his shows, and even get up on stage with the band to sing “I love Rock ’n’ Roll” by Joan Jett. That was my first experience performing music and I just never stopped. I started on drums when I was 9, then moved over to guitar I think subconsciously because I was craving something I could create over. I picked up the guitar and never put it down. I started writing songs when I was 13, and then just never really considered another path.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
I blend my country roots with the playful, experimental nature of indie pop. I have country tendencies with rhyme and structure and having a strong lyrical hook, and indie pop can be very loose in all of these things. I think maybe that is what sets me apart is my tie of both of these genres together. I also find myself bringing in unique and nontraditional ideas lyrically as well as in the studio with vocal layers, playing around with stripping instruments away, etc. I think the marriage of both of these different genres is what creates a sound that is unique to me.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
If I could, I would love to collaborate with Kelsea Ballerini. I think we are both similar in the way she’s not afraid to put everything in her music. She leaves nothing out and always gives 100% in her lyrics. I got the chance to meet her a few years ago and she is so sweet and down to earth and I honestly think we were best friends in another life. I admire her not only for her music, but her ability to be the most raw and real version of herself in everything she does, including when she’s on the stage. I so much look up to her for that and really hope that given the chance to be on stages like her, I could have a similar stage presence and be able to make the audience feel like her best friends in the way that she does. She also goes on writing trips with her core group of women that she writes with, spending every day hanging out, drinking wine, and writing songs, and I truly hope that one day I could have a group of women around me like that.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
Feel every emotion, the good and the bad, to the fullest. Emotion is part of the human experience, and I’d argue the best part of the human experience. Emotions are scary and we are conditioned to push certain ones down, but one thing I love about songwriting, for me, is that I get to jump headfirst into every emotion I feel. Feeling the hard feelings to the fullest gives you the ability to feel the best ones to the fullest, and also, you are never alone in what you are feeling. I can guarantee someone else has felt, or is feeling the exact same way as you, including me!
Tell us about your most unusual talent or party trick.
I’m not sure if I really have an unusual talent or trick, but I will say I survive off of tea (like I drink tea all day long every day and never drink water) and applesauce packets (like I could eat a whole box of GoGo Squeeze in one sitting). I wouldn’t call it a talent but at least I got the unusual part haha.
If you could have any superhero power, what would it be and why?
If I could have any superhero power it would be the ability to fly. I’ve always felt so at peace looking out an airplane window. Growing up I would always get the window seat, and to this day when I book a flight somewhere I try and get a window seat every time if I can. It makes me feel small to see the world from above and it makes me both very introspective and extrospective at the same time. I always feel really creative when I feel small compared to the rest of the world. Standing next to the ocean gives me the same feeling, which is why I love the ocean so much too. Being able to see the world from a little farther away anytime I want would allow me to get away from myself and my problems and realize that I really am just a tiny little dot on a giant spinning rock in the sky.
What two nonessential items would you want if you were shipwrecked on a deserted island?
I have a “slight” obsession with tea, so I would definitely need my favorite mug and lifetime supply of tea, and I’m going to count that as one haha! I would also have to have my guitar because I would be lost without being able to play and write. I honestly believe that I would be able to survive with tea and my guitar.
Would you rather be the one in a movie who gets the hero/heroine or the baddie with all the good lines?
I would rather BE the hero if I had the choice. I’ve always thought it’s more important to be a good person than say all the right things.
If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself?
If I could talk to a younger version of me I would tell her that the most important relationship is the one with herself. I wish I could go back and save her from all of the heartache, but having gone through it, I also wouldn’t change anything because it made me into the person I am today. It also gave me the ability to put it all into music to hopefully help anyone else that has been through similar experiences. I would also tell her that nothing is as big as it feels. Things will happen that feel like your world is ending, but you’re strong enough to make it out the other side, and everything happens for a reason. You are never given anything you’re not strong enough to handle. I would also love to tell her that she will be living in Nashville, finding herself and her sound, writing and recording music with her best friends in the world.
