Toronto singer songwriter Mia Baron is a 13-year-old emerging artist ready to make waves in the music landscape. Mia discovered her love for music while performing in her school choir – her love for singing made Mia realize she wanted to pursue a career in music.

Mia recently released her debut single “hide and seek” and is now following with new single “Friend To Me”. The song is a moody pop track about not taking care of your emotional health and realizing, maybe too late, that you should have cared for your wellbeing and hoping it’s not too late.

Getting to know Mia

What’s the most useless talent you have?

The most useless talent I have is this weird hand clapping. You move your arm up and down when your hand is loose and just let your hand slap your palm and make noise.

You are a new addition to a crayon box. What color would you be and why?

I would be the color black because I think my music is dark and mysterious like the color black.

If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself?

I would advise younger self to be more confident and make friends instead of being shy because that gets you feeling lonely and feeling like you don’t belong.

What is your most expensive piece of clothing?

I’m pretty sure the most expensive piece of clothing I have that I know of is a fancy dress I got a couple of years ago for an event.

If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be?

If I could change anything about myself, I would change my laugh because when I laugh, I sound too high pitched and that sounds funny.

What first got you into music?

I first got into music by joining school choirs and then later getting more serious and starting my first singing competition. After that I got a vocal coach and continued participating in competitions and doing covers.

Are you finding the isolation of the pandemic conducive to your writing or is it hindering the experiences you can write about?

There are definitely a lot of Mental Health issues you could write about considering we are stuck at home and that affects people’s mentality a lot. I think if there wasn’t covid I would have way more things to write about because I would have more opportunities to do more things, but right now I am not missing any material to write about. There is still plenty to write.

What would you be doing right now if it wasn’t for your music career?

If it wasn’t for my music career, I’d be enjoying Netflix a lot more and hanging out with my friends more.

How would you describe your music?

I would describe my music as Indie or Alt Pop.

What are your top two favorite songs of all time? Why those songs?

My top two songs now are “Don’t want my Heart” by Sarah Cothran and “Dear Society” by Madison Beer. I love Dear Society not only because of the melody, but also because I can relate to it a lot because the internet is a very bad place where you can see many different things and that can affect your Mental Health. Don’t want my Heart is another personal favorite because it’s so catchy and the meaning is about having a broken heart and not being able to handle it, so you don’t want your heart anymore.
