First off, congratulations on purchasing your first home! You’ve achieved a great accomplishment, and it’s time to decorate the place to your liking. You can finally put holes in the walls, paint your walls whatever color you want, and mount your TV.

However, some first-time homeowners can get a bit carried when decorating, and we’re here to stop you from making the same mistakes we’ve made. Keep reading to discover five decorating mistakes to avoid as a first-time homeowner.

Forgetting To Plan Out Your Space

When decorating your new home, you need to consider the amount of space you have. Some new homeowners only see interior design as wall art, color palettes, and nice furniture. Our advice is to measure your furniture and floor plans in advance so that you can buy appropriately-sized furniture and décor.

Buying All Your Furniture at Once

While buying all your furniture at once seems convenient, it leaves you susceptible to making more mistakes. You might think that a rug will be great with your sectional, but you can’t be certain until you know all the other elements you’ve ordered; the rug might be too small or not the right color. Unless you have a good eye, it isn’t easy to envision all your furniture together.

Slow down and relax. The best rooms feel collected and homey because they naturally evolve. Do your research, determine if you want mass-produced or custom pieces, and invest in timeless furniture.

Overcrowding the Room

Sometimes less is more. It’s tempting to think that you need to fill every inch of your space. Remember to think about the focal point of the room. Think about how you can enhance your furniture, not overshadow it.

Following Décor Trends

One of the biggest decorating mistakes to avoid as a first-time homeowner is to follow popular décor trends too closely. Instead of filling your home with furniture sets, find vintage furniture pieces for a unique and bold look. You want your home to be full of your personality, not someone else’s!

Focusing on Cosmetics Over Functionality

You want to have functionality in your home. When planning your furniture, consider planning your flooring, storage space, and lighting first. Then, prepare your paints or wallpaper. You should always prioritize your necessities and repairs before your home accessories.
