Crystal Poles is the new Gothic Soul project from L.A. based indie recording artists Scarlett Taylor.

Taylor wrote most of the material for Crystal Poles following manic-depressive episodes of some rather impulsive behavior, yet always maintained her sobriety, a concept extremely important to her. She based the album concept around “White Shade,” who is the evil and foreboding side of Taylor; a reckless and impulsive character who often finds herself in trouble at Hollywood parties.

“Crystal Poles” follows White Shade through various parties/clubs (Crystal Poles, Left Him At The Party) She also discovers her true self after moving from Minnesota to Los Angeles (July 2nd) Taylor plans revenge on a past partner who caused her plenty of emotional turmoil (Lakehouse) and finally, Taylor discovers her true self after moving from Minnesota to Los Angeles to pursue her music career (July 2nd).

In the last song, Taylor awakens from embodying White Shade; preaching “I feel no pain…i’m moving far away…from this greed and fame…Goodbye, goodbye to White Shade. Goodbye to my old ways. I’m sick of the fake life…of the rich lies…land of snakes and flies.”

As a follow to the March 2018 EP “Heaven Punk,” this collection of material takes its dark and soulful cue from the sound of early 90s Soul, Goth, Darkwave, Hip Hop, and Alternative Rock. More uptempo than previous projects, Crystal Poles finds Scarlett in similar angsty themes with a slightly different sound palette.

Crystal Poles will be released on November 18 by Borderline Musick and distributed by AWAL. A winter tour is currently being booked in the Southwest. Taylor will be performing at TRiP in Santa Monica on January 24th, 2019.

“Crystal Poles” As Single

“Crystal Poles” is the fierce and sexy title track from my upcoming album. I wrote this song following a break up from a long-term relationship. I was going through an exploration of my personality, energy, and sexuality. This song is the “party” following my previous albums, in which I start to discover myself as an individual and artist. Perfect for the club, driving through Los Angeles, or just vibing, “Crystal Poles” will take you through a dark and sexy night. -Scarlett

A Little About Scarlett

Scarlett Taylor is an American singer and songwriter. She is a professional recording artist signed to independent record label Borderline Musick. Originally based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Taylor jump-started her career in the twin cities with the recording and release of her first four albums. She supported these releases with shows at various venues such as Seventh Street Entry at First Avenue and the Fine Line. Scarlett currently resides and works out of Los Angeles, California where she has performed at venues such as The Whisky A Go Go and The Rainbow Room.

Singing and writing from a very young age, Scarlett’s interest in music was evident from the beginning. She grew up listening to many different music genres – including Deftones, Evanescence, Enya, Amy Winehouse – in which she says have heavily influenced her writing and musical style over the years. Singing in the choir at church and school, as well as being involved heavily in theatre, were part of Taylor’s everyday life. She also played clarinet for five years, which she attributes to her sense of beat and rhythm. Her senior year of high school she was assigned to sing “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper for a high school production. Taylor not only discovered the true strength and power of her voice, but found she had natural performance skills. It was this same year she met her producer, Disraeli Davis, by chance at her part-time job at Subway. Taylor and Davis started creating together, and found they both had very similar writing style and enjoyed the same sound/genre of music. They quickly produced “Lucid,” a sad core, down-tempo collection of ballads and poetry. Lucid was released in March of 2015, just five months after Davis and Taylor started working together.

Shortly before Taylor’s release of “Lucid,” she left home and lived alone for a few months at the age of eighteen. Having a very troubling childhood, Taylor found refuge and comfort in creating music and writing. From 2016 to 2018, Taylor released three more albums, “Churches,” “3,” and “Heaven Punk.” Taylor attended Concordia University in Saint Paul for one year following high school graduation, originally working towards a BA in theatre. She ultimately decided her music career was most important and withdrew following her freshman year. Different from “Lucid,” each album progressively got more up-tempo. Taylor and Davis experimented with different sounds, ultimately finding that “dark pop” complimented her style and voice best. She supported each release with live shows, street promotion, and social media. Gaining attention from the press on her third album, “3,” her video “Concrete Angels” was named one of “The Best Local Music Videos of 2017” by City Pages, a popular Minneapolis newspaper. Taylor’s video for “Children Of The Sun” generated more buzz, again being featured in the City Pages. Her release of “Heaven Punk” in 2018 was brooding and dramatic. After a long term relationship break-up in August of 2017, and her long-estranged mother tried to re-enter her life, Taylor got major inspiration for the album.

Taylor moved to Los Angeles in July of 2018. She is currently working on building up her audience in the City of Angels, and of course, creating more music with producer Davis.
