Emerging Scottish artist Keir Gibson is back with new music after an impressive breakthrough in 2019. Keir released his first single ‘Eyes Wide’ in August last year, the day before performing at the Belladrum Festival – the Highland singer’s “home festival”.
In the nine months that followed he: released his second single ‘Hollow’; was played on BBC Radio 1 several times by DJs Scott Mills and Molly King; was earmarked by The Scottish Sun as “Scotland’s next big breakthrough talent”; and toured the UK. This was all before rounding off the year performing to 5,000 revellers at Edinburgh’s famous Hogmanay Street Party.
This month, the 19-year-old who lives in the shadow of Ben Nevis is set to release his third and most ambitious single to date – ‘Circles’.
‘Circles’ is the third installment in a series of emotion-laden, escapist pop songs all produced by London duo The Nocturns, mixed by Matty Green (Dua Lipa, Dermot Kennedy) and mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Joe La Porta.
The track reinforces Keir’s signature sound, which combines alt-pop soundscapes comparable to producers and artists like Jon Bellion, Lauv and Maggie Rogers with vivid lyricism that could be mistaken for a script from the latest wistful teen drama on Netflix.
Capping it all off is Keir’s emotive voice – one which hints at a thoughtful character and old soul which it’s difficult to believe belong to a 19-year-old Highlander who finished High School less than a year ago.
‘Circles’ provides Keir’s perspective on a relationship that’s past its best. Keir said: “‘Circles’ is about two people who are in a constant cycle of falling in and out with each other. They both know it’s unhealthy but at the same time they’re too afraid to lose the other person by turning their backs on the relationship and admitting that it’s over.”
Summer 2020 was set to see Keir bring his full live band out to entertain audiences at the Kelvingrove Bandstand, Belladrum, Live at Leeds and to support arena-fillers The Stereophonics.
Like all musicians, Keir’s best laid plans have been interrupted by COVID-19. Instead, he has been entertaining music fans virtually, including performing a set on the King Tut’s Facebook page as part of the recent ‘Sofathon Singalong’.
Keir said: “It’s gutting to have my early 2020 and summer shows postponed, but obviously everyone’s safety comes first. I’ve been working hard to reschedule gigs for later this year and hope to announce these very soon.
“In the meantime, I’m continuing to work on new music and am keen to keep sharing it with everyone who has supported me over the last 12 months. ‘Circles’ is the first of a few new tracks I’m hoping to release this year. Hopefully, it entertains people while they’re stuck inside!”
