Singer-songwriter Campbell Harrison released a new single “Underneath the Skin” October 4th, 2019 to all digital download and streaming retailers. Campbell who was raised in the diverse music culture of Atlanta, GA moved to Nashville last year to immerse himself in the music city culture of songwriting and music. “Underneath the Skin” is a hopeful, yet lamenting tune about love, loss, acceptance, and the possibility of new growth. The title lyrics “Underneath the Skin” imply that not all which is gone is lost forever, and some things stick with you, for better or worse. The upbeat and major tones of the song paired with the somewhat melancholy subject matter forms a juxtaposition that helps to illustrate the hopefulness hidden within loss. Harrison wrote and composed the single and co-produced the song with songwriter Gavin Huburt in Nashville. The single takes you on a nostagic journey back to the 70’s which makes sense since Campbell was raised in the southern hippie culture. He keeps himself centered and his personal values at the forefront of his music. He is a young man who knows what he wants and is willing to get there on his talent, drive and love of music. Fame is not his intention. His goal is to be acknowledged as a serious artist who makes powerful music. Campbell, said, “I compare myself to the best, not the worst. If you want to be the best then that’s the metric by which you have to critique yourself.”
“Underneath the Skin” is sneaky in a way because the subject matter is a bit sad, but it’s presented in a lighthearted and fun way because of the orchestration of music and the production. If you don’t pay attention to the lyrics, you would almost think that it was a “windows down, highway song. Harrison says, “I would say there is an element of duality in this song that reflects the complex nature of human relationships. Happy and sad are not necessarily opposing ends of the same string and can exist simultaneously, just like the happy, major sounding chords played underneath the melancholy subject matter of the lyrics. I hope that people are able to grasp onto the message and relate to it. Maybe it will remind them of a past relationship or maybe they will just enjoy the bouncy groove of it. Either way, I want them to get a hopeful and constructive attitude from it.”
On the heels of his successful album release Dreamer in a Bottle (2017), Campbell Harrison is going to be releasing newly developed songs and content into and through the new year. He is currently making his way through writer rounds in Nashville, working with some of the best songwriters born from music city.
