Divine would like to extend a warm welcome to Scott; we’re so pleased he joined us to answer some questions about him and the work he does.
Described by The Guardian as “inspirational” and listed in the 2016 Pride Power Awards, Scott McGlynn is a force to be reckoned with. His debut book, OUT, received critical acclaim and he’s no stranger to being included in lists of gay influencers with big names including the likes of Sir Ian McKellen and Stephen Fry.
Our Divine Editorial Manager was delighted to personally chat to Scott (that lovely Welsh accent! Sigh) and find out a little about what makes him tick.
So, Scott. Here at Divine we always like to ask some trivia questions to find out more about you on a more personal level…so here goes.
Would you rather be the fella in a movie who gets the guy or the baddie with all the good lines?
Ooooo, I think I have to go for the baddie, Something completely opposite to me, Maybe like a superhero baddie 🙂
What’s your favourite personality trait you like about yourself?
Kindness, I treat people how I like to be treated, loved and kindness go a long way
And just as you thought it was safe -what’s your least favourite personality trait about yourself?
I do get stressed, the reason being is that things I do for people to see, from articles, interviews, recording, TV etc. I like to be 110% perfect, I’m a perfectionist and I get a little stressed to get it to perfection!
Do you have popcorn with a movie?
POPCORN! I love the stuff! Sweet is my first, but I don’t mind sweet and salted 🙂
Are you a valuable asset on a Pub Quiz team?
I’m not the best I have to be honest! Unless it’s a topic I like e.g. movies / music I’m ok, but anything else I’m absolutely rubbish! I don’t go as often anymore; maybe because I’m that bad I don’t get invited ha!!
We know you advocate anti-bullying because you suffered as a kid and young teen. How do you feel your pod cast and work in the LGBTQ community helps others to tackle their own similar situations?
Absolutely! What I went through and most people, I don’t want it happening to others. I didn’t have support growing up. The Podcast brings peoples’ stories together to share. Everyone has a different story which is all about sharing each other’s experiences.
What first got you into doing celebrity interviews at https://scottmcglynn.net/?
I first started off doing bits and bobs on fashion items. Back then I didn’t connect so much with that on my site, so I had a few showbiz friends I asked to an interview with, like Q&A 10 questions. It just took off from there. The people I work with are amazing!
How did all of this publicity on what you do and who you are come about – it’s no mean feat getting noticed by the likes of the organisations and awards you’re currently nominated in. Tell us how your little corner of the world got to be so high profile.
I honestly believe in “How much you put in, you get back” I worked 13-15 hours a day from connecting with people, getting content, promoting, touring, I work hard; it’s in my nature, I think the amazing awards nomination for “Diversity Awards” to “Power Pride List” is just so honouring!
You’re a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan and often escaped into this show, using it as a role model almost to see just how the outsider coped with life and in fact, became a heroine. Do you feel that immersing yourself into television shows helped you develop your own path into accepting you were gay and coping with everyday life?
YES!! Funny you ask, I was watching my favorite episodes last night! Growing up on a show like this, and Marvel programmes like ” X-Men” – these shows are great to give you some guidance, for myself anyway, People weren’t accepting me, and Buffy I do love her! The struggle she went through for being different, yet still is a hero whom people don’t really know about, that’s me! HA!
You say you felt there were a lack of gay role models, especially growing up in Southern Wales. Do you feel this has changed over the years?
I think it’s changing but we’re not there yet. People are being more open about coming out, or transitioning and sharing each other’s stories. This is what we need in the world. I didn’t have internet it was very new when I was growing up, but now connecting with people worldwide is amazing, Everyone LGBT in my eyes is a role model, just from sharing stories with each other. This helps so many people you wouldn’t believe.
What’s next in store for Scott McGlynn- what are your future plans?
I’m working on a school tour, going around meeting and chatting to LGBT teenagers, working on my Podcast “The Scott McGlynn Show”. However, stay tuned! I’m working on some more exciting projects which I unfortunately can’t say much about right now.
With a new publicity tour just around the corner Scott’s name is one to watch for 2017. For those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of his podcast The Scott McGlynn Show, now’s the time to take notice. The podcast, available on iTunes, Soundcloud and Stitcher, combines news and advice with real life coming out stories from top LGBT celebrities. Since its launch earlier this year Scott has already interviewed Hollywood stars such as Daniel Franzese, Mark Zammit and Pandora Boxx of RuPaul’s Drag Race- and there are plenty more lined up over the coming months.
Scott has been nominated for the Positive Role Model award at this year’s NDA’s (National Diversity Awards). When asked how he feels about being a role model Scott said, “I grew up when there were very few positive role models for young gay people. That is now changing, but bullying and discrimination are still very real issues for many. I’m proud to be seen as a role model and will continue to do everything I can to let people know that growing up LGBT doesn’t have to be a battle.”
We’d like to thank Scott for being such a good sport and giving his time to be interviewed. We hope that his dreams and aspirations are met and that his future journey is all that he wants it to be.
