When did you start writing music?
I have written in a Journal for as long as I can remember and a lot of this was poetry. I learned to play the guitar when I was 15, learned a few songs and the songs started coming right away. It felt very natural.
What is your biggest musical challenge?
Currently the challenge is making connections and finding gigs. I’m in a new community and am a single mom to a beautiful 6 year old girl. The internet has been helpful in connecting me to the right people. It’s difficult to show up to local songwriter nights or open mics to mee the right people, but not impossible.
How do you go about writing a song? Do you have a melody in your head and then write the other music for it?
It’s an evolving process, but it usually starts with a melody that catches my ear. I start coming up with the lyrics while I’m in movement (walking, doing household chores, driving) Usually after that I start to write down the lyrics and figure out the guitar chords to match the melody. Then I write out the skeleton of the song and start building it. I usually continue to find the lyrics through movement and also while playing the guitar. Sometimes I record it on my phone and send it to a musician friend for feedback. I continue this process until I feel I have a working song.
Do you plan your music release, or do you finish a song and release it?
Oh yes, the release is a big production for me. I need to upload it 6 to 8 weeks before release day so it can be pitched to playlists on Spotify. This also gives me time to promote it and gain some interest so people will pre save it. I also need to make sure single artwork is completed. Once it’s out, the admin work continues with promoting the crap out of it.
How do you deal with writer’s block?
Through acceptance. If it’s not working for me, I will not push it. The song will come when it’s ready. I used to be afraid I’d never get another song when writer’s block was kicking around, but songwriter and singing is so ingrained into who I am that I don’t worry about it. Life circumstances are good inspiration and life is a wild ride so there will be another song coming eventually.
What would be an ideal food cooked for you on a date night?
Well first of all I’d be super impressed that someone cooked for me. I don’t know, something like a pasta dish with homemade bread. yeah that would do the trick.
If you were a member of the spice girls, what would your spice handle be?
I was a Spice Girls freak. I even had a Spice Girls themed birthday party with my friend Jessica when I was 10. Meg Spice has a nice ring to it.
What was the last tv series you watched on tv?
I finished Soulmate on prime video. It’s about a test you can take that will tell you who your true soul mate is.
What’s the least favorite personality trait you like about yourself ?
Well I’m a cool person, but if anything, not being a morning person. I envy people who can hop out of bed and be ready for the day.
I need to shower, stretch, sip coffee in the silence etc. It’s a process.
What would you bring to an idyllic picnic?
Wine of course.
My beautiful friend inside and out. With the voice of an angel. Real music Real soul….
