Born and raised to Korean Immigrant parents in Korea Town of Los Angeles, California, Doctor Yizzle learned to make music in the living room of his one bedroom apartment.
He quickly fell in love with music when he was introduced to Eminem by secretly taking his brother’s iPod and came across his song “Rock Bottom”. From that moment on, he passionately learned about the history of Hip Hop. At the same time, he kept taking his brother’s iPod and came across Rock music and R&B which he devoutly dived into. Through all of that, he wanted to make music therefore, he taught himself how to make beats and engineer himself. He wanted to hone his craft and become the best rapper alive, so he meticulously studied wordplay and kept practicing. Now, he has accumulated over a million streams throughout the internet and was featured on the Rolling Stone India, EnVi Media, VoyageLA, Etc. He continues to grow and plans to become the best version that he could possibly be. Cross-pollinating genres such as Hiphop, Alternative Rock, Lo-fi, and so many more, Yizzle pursues breaking genres and shattering the borders of music. Brimming with endless self-belief, creative endeavors, and self-less energy, Doctor Yizzle is only waiting for his spot to be on top of the world.
What do you enjoy most about being an artist?
The one part I enjoy the most is when I get messages from my community about how much my music has impacted them. That part will never get old to me. I still can’t fathom the idea of being able to touch people’s souls through my energy and music. That’s what I truly care about. To change people’s lives and positively impact the world. It’s about my supporters. That’s what gives me purpose and light in my life.
Has your musical journey had a deliberate direction or did it simply gradually evolve in whatever direction it found?
When I first started, I thought I would be the biggest artist in the world by the age of 21. But that is not the case but I still do have that desire. My journey has evolved in a way that I am certainly most proud of. I have built this from the ground up with no help, no team, and no connections. I cannot ask for a better community and people that support my dreams. This is actually one of the most important lessons I’ve learned through the midst of this. To let, whatever happens, happen. To fully accept it and only worry about things that you COULD control. I am really proud of where I am now. If I got what I wanted earlier then I wouldn’t have evolved as I have. What I mean by that is that I believe my music has become so good and that was only due to my hunger to desperately “make” it. If I became successful earlier, I wouldn’t have been able to make as good of music as I am doing right now due to comfortability.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
Treat yourself like how you would treat your friends/family.
If we were to look at the artists you are listening to, who would be on your playlist?
Lil baby, Mozzy, Sabrina Claudio, Tory Lanez, Drake, XXXTentacion, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Fivio Foreign, BENEE, Pop Smoke, Eminem, Wu-Tang, Dro Kenji, Joji, Freddie Dredd, Joe Hisaishi, Kaycyy, Westside Gunn, Conway, Benny, Keshi, BTS, The Game, Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Blxst, Kehlani, Dave, Pusha T, $tupid Young, Justin Bieber, Eli Sostre, 22Gz, Jeezy, Mac Miller, Juice WRLD, Russ, Vince Staples. etc.
If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to the next musical generation, what would it be?
You are going to face adversity and it’s going to test you constantly. Consistent no’s. That is all you will ever hear till you make a name for yourself. People in this industry don’t care about you, they only see numbers. You are going to face much more judgment than you will ever feel in your life but you have to develop a thick skin and believe in yourself more than anyone. Find your own path, study this game meticulously, and have healthy soil for every thought you plant in your mind. You got this. Don’t give up.
If you were to write an autobiography, what would the title be?
Against All Odds
What would be the ideal food to have cooked for you on a date night?
Korean Food. If my girl cooks me Korean food, THEN WOW. Specifically, spicy tofu soup would be the one dish I would be extremely impressed with.
Which are cooler? Dinosaurs or Dragons?
Dinosaurs for sure. I’ve always been the biggest fan of dinosaurs and always wanted to be one when I was little. I mean, dinosaurs are dragons if you really think about it. And dragons never existed so… Dinosaurs are much cooler.
If you could learn any language fluently what would it be?
Spanish. I really do wish I could learn this language fluently and I know that one day I will. I think it is a very useful language to have. I’ve always wanted to make a Latin song because I love the rhythm of the drums they implement and how the energy within these songs automatically makes you feel a certain way. One day.
If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself?
If I could tell my younger version of me anything, it would be that this journey is harder than you think. You need to have much more patience and get ready for the most mentally challenging era of your life. MUCH more downs than ups. But it will all be worth it in the end. You’re going to touch people through music and you will become exceptionally good at your craft.
