A great pop record is like a great friend: an intimate confidante, a shoulder to cry on, and a partner in crime when you’re ready to get dolled up and dance the pain away under the disco ball (or in front of your bedroom mirror.) That’s what you’ll find on MARCI: a guileless collection of synth pop songs that brim with unabashed sincerity and a whole lot of danceability.

The confidence of Marci’s debut solo music belies the fact that she has never formally written songs before, though she’s been a student of melody since her childhood in rural Ontario. She would sing along to the radio pop divas du jour, perform in the church choir, and participate in piano recitals.

The middle child of five sisters, Marci describes herself as a shy singer at home, who would instead seek out secret spots – the forest behind her home or a broken down van on their property were favorites – to practice her singing and record the songs she would make up herself into a handheld recorder. She was encouraged to do so by her grandfather, a refugee from the former Yugoslavia, who would sing and record both original songs and traditional Croatian folk songs on a cassette dictation machine.

Who inspired you to make music?

My friends helped motivate me to start recording my own stuff. David also really inspired me to come out of my shell and experiment and encouraged me to record this record.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

It’s allowed us to share and listen to more music, which is great. But that’s also turned us into less attentive listeners. I think while it’s allowing fans to know more about the artists they like, it’s taken away a lot of the mystery – it’s also made it harder for artists, who have to generate content constantly to keep people engaged which takes away from the music.

Have you got a ritual of sorts when making music?

Not particularly, I like to have some whiskey hehe.

How would you describe your music?

Fun flirty pop that’s a little freaky.

What’s next for you?

Release a couple more songs and a full LP,

Gonna spend some time in London to work on LP 2

Play my songs live in the fall! 🙂

What are your top two favorite songs of all time? Why those songs?

Well since that’s tough, I’m gonna pick two songs I’m listening to a lot right now:

1 April Wine – Say Hello

2 Shanice – I love your smile

Say hello has such a good feel and groove

I love your smile has that insanely catchy melody

What was the last series you watched on TV?

Just finished What We Do in the Shadows! So funny

Also currently watching Better Call Saul

What do you think the greatest invention has been?

Blue Gatorade

Do you have any lucky items, objects, or traditions?

I have a weird relationship with the number 3… superstitions stuff. It’s silly but I can’t help it!

If you had to describe yourself as a flavor, what would it be?

Probably buttered popcorn because I eat it so much

Marci will kick off her debut solo North American tour this Autumn, starting in Montreal on the 8th of October. Ahead of that, she will be touring Europe with TOPS.
