What Coaches Look for at a Baseball Tryout

Whenever you are showcasing yourself in front of someone, it can be stressful. Now, multiply that with the number of your peers and multiple coaches present, and you can see why some struggle with tryouts. However, your play is a fraction of what coaches look for at a baseball tryout.

Play Your Game

Don’t try to overestimate the importance of the tryout. It’s not a good idea to go to tryouts and attempt to show off for the coaches. Simply play the style that suits your skills and let the game come to you. Wait patiently for your moment to present itself, and then decisively showcase your talents to the best of your ability.

Anxiety or nerves might cause players to overextend themselves by throwing too hard or swinging out of their shoes. Instead, grab a bat you are comfortable with, use the same plate routine you’ve always had, and swing with confidence. Quality coaches know that nerves might play a factor, so there’s no need to work yourself up into a frenzy.

Look Like a Pro

Although you or your child might not have had one yet, you must treat this tryout like a job interview. First impressions mean everything, so you want to look and act the part. Show up early because that signifies that you are trustworthy and mean serious business. Plus, showing up late might aggravate coaches enough to dismiss you entirely.

You also want to look like a baseball player. Wear traditional baseball garb like baseball pants, caps, athletic wear, shoes, etc. You don’t want to show up wearing a pair of shorts and no hat, especially if the tryout is outside. Apart from this, there are several online stores where you can find the baseball equipment but if you are in search of the best baseball bats that’d help you to hit homeruns in the senior league then must visit this link.

Display a Positive Attitude

Coaches want a player that takes constructive criticism, is approachable and listens to them. They do not want someone who is hard-headed and stubborn. They don’t want one of their players on the team to be a drain on everyone else. Having a positive outlook on things is an excellent way to go through life regardless of whether there’s a game involved or not.

Be confident but not cocky. Confidence consists of shaking off an error, key strikeout, or swinging at a bad pitch. There is a drastic difference between the two traits, and coaches can pick up on that. Those hindrances can affect a player mightily, so the quicker they respond, the better.

Enjoy Yourself

It sounds cliché, but coaches need to see that you enjoy the game. They would like to see you having some fun. When you like what you are doing, the odds are you will perform better at it.  Coaches love to see players as passionate about the game as they are. Let go of any self-imposed pressure and perform your best. Coaches will notice your talent, even if you aren’t performing at your peak. Play your best and enjoy every second.

Knowing what coaches are looking for at a baseball tryout can ease your mind and prepare you for the road ahead. Remember, one lousy tryout shouldn’t deter you from giving it your all. After all, your play is a small piece to the puzzle, considering who you are as a person carries more weight.
