Today we’re very lucky to be interviewing Melissa Graves author of Tainted Heart
Hi Melissa, thank you for agreeing to this interview.
Do you buy a book because of the cover, the blurb, or something else?
A good cover is rare, and covers often don’t reflect the meat of a story—I’m more likely to be drawn to a well-written summary. There’s an art to successful summaries and blurbs that I have a lot of respect for. To boil down a novel to a few sentences that are capable of capturing a reader’s interest is not an easy thing to do, so if a book has a blurb that can do that, the author has my immediate attention.
What does ‘romance’ mean to you?
Romance, especially erotic romance, can be a lot of things. For me, there has to be a certain poetry to it, a sense that the people involved fit together in some crucial way. It’s important to me that their feelings be mutual—there doesn’t have to be an immediate accord (what’s the fun in that?), but I’m not a fan of stories where one person has to persuade or pursue another to an extreme degree before that person “realizes” they feel the same. I think romance should be layered, whether you’re writing PG dating or kinky sex scenes. A character’s romance should make me feel something, want something, think something. If I’m not pining or aching or fighting off the urge to read ahead, something is missing.
What are your current projects?
Tainted Heart, the second book of the Mi Corazon Sangrante series, comes out on November 5th. The story is a deeper dive into the lives of two gay men, one a human doctor named Brian Preston who cares for vampire patients, and the other a young vampire named Kyle Hayes. In book one, Bleeding Heart, Brian and Kyle meet and fall in love and fight their first battle together. In Tainted Heart, they’ve been living together and working (at times) together, and are facing new challenges, both at work and at home. We get to see them struggle through some doubts and fears and drama in a new, more realistic fashion. Their relationship deepens and reveals itself, tying especially into Brian’s personal history in a way that will make your heart twist for him. Simultaneously, the political intrigue has higher—even life-threatening—stakes.
What is the most difficult part of writing for you?
Most authors would simply say “starting”, but for me it’s always been middles. I usually always know where I’m beginning and going, but the journey is rough, especially because I want that journey to be well-paced and entertaining. Outlines are the only thing that get me through—especially when they’re chock full of smut!
Tell us something about yourself that would surprise people.
I’m a total wuss when it comes to body modification. I don’t have any tattoos. The only piercings I have are the ones my parents had done to my ears when I was a baby. I’ve never dyed my hair. One of my New Year’s resolutions going into 2016 is to change this—I think I might get inked. Who knows, maybe it’ll even be Mi Corazon Sangrante related!

A year after meeting and falling for the young, mysterious vampire, Dr. Brian Preston is now living and working side-by-side with Kyle Hayes for the agency guiding vampire-human relations at a secret underground facility. As the couple adapts to the demands of Brian’s career tending to vampires, Kyle’s return to school and the needs of their evolving relationship, a dangerous conspiracy puts everyone they know and everything they have been working for in danger. The sequel to 2014’s Bleeding Heart, Tainted Heart is Book Two in the Mi Corazón Sangrante series.
When it gets dark, he texts Brian that he’s going to be out late, and avails himself of not one but three vampire-human nightclubs set along a dense strip of Chicago nightlife. Going alone to places like this always attracts immediate attention, and he isn’t surprised when he has to pry both humans and vampires off of himself. But he doesn’t mind—the blood from the center is humming in his veins, and that buzz takes on a new dimension every time that he swallows a thimbleful of blood from a donor, which he does at least a dozen times over the course of the evening. When he’s more relaxed, he allows bodies against his own, dancing with strangers until strobe lights become normal and everything outside is too dim and still.
The blood changes the world around him. Every color, every sound and every source of light takes on a life of its own.
He loses track of how many donors he pays. All he knows is he’s spent all of the pocket money that Brian gave him for the weekend.
He feels like a bloated tick. He’s been away too long. Brian. He has to get back to Brian.
