About the Author
Karrie lives in Australia’s sunshine state with her husband and two sons, though she hates the sun with a passion. She dreams of one day living in the wettest and coldest habitable place she can find. She’s been writing stories in her head for years but has finally managed to pull the words out of her head and share them with others. She spends her days trying to type her stories on the computer without disturbing her beloved cat, Lu, curled up on the keyboard. She probably reads far too much.

Detective Jack Mitchell is not a people person. After fourteen years dealing with the monsters of society, he has learned to keep people at arm’s length. Failing is his biggest frustration, and on the case of his career, he is having no luck hunting down a copycat serial killer…or the one man who survived the original case.

Six years ago, Will Blaikie was taken by a monster who changed his life forever. Narrowly surviving, he has become a prisoner in his own home. Friendless and alone, he watches in horror as a new monster emerges who only wants to copy the murderous deeds of Will’s monster…including taking Will.

When these two men are thrown together, and the monster comes for them both, one must learn to feel safe and protected, and the other must learn to feel love and peace.

Great Debut Novel!
Overall

4.0
I’m always eager to try new authors, and Karrie Roman’s Saved is a shining example of why!  When the past of a man who is nearly agoraphobic from a serial killer’s kidnapping/torture becomes the present for his community once again in the form of a copycat killer, he needs 24/7 protection.  When the lead detective on the case takes his first look at the lovely but tormented soul, his own soul dictates that he must offer more than just guarding a body.

Will is six years out from the horror his life became, but even knowing his monster is physically dead, he is surviving but not particularly living.  I instantly felt a connection to Will.  The character’s background, personality, determination, and attitude just sucked me right in.

Jack is rather a brusque man, as working in homicide can cause.  He has a solid partner on the force (Kate) whom he trusts with his life, but he prefers being the one in control.  I wasn’t certain right off the bat what I thought of him, because there was something niggling in the back of my brain that I couldn’t quite identify (I’ll get into that in a moment).

This is a murder mystery/suspense/crime drama debut novel…quite a feat to accomplish.  The premise is great, but there were a few aspects that definitely showed the author’s newness.  Jack is a dedicated detective, yet a lot of the police aspects are skimmed over (this is the niggling I referenced), which in turn detracts from the character’s overall completeness.  Also, taking a protectee out on dates quite seriously contradicts the whole “protection” thing that is supposed to be going on as the main portion of the book.  I suspect that as the author continues to grow in her craft, things like these won’t be missed.

The plot itself is quite rich, drawing the reader out of their mind and fully engaging in the book.  Character interactions are dynamic, in turn evoking humor, compassion, anger, and many more emotions from the reader.  There is a very slow burn romance aspect that is heart-meltingly sweet.  It is here that Jack really shines.  His instant attraction to Will allows him to move beyond his self-imposed boundaries to offer comfort and safety to a haunted man.  The suspense aspect is actually fairly light despite the overall nature of the synopsis.

In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and I am hoping that a couple of the characters from this one make their way into their own story.  I’m rating this at four stars, and I am looking forward to seeing what this author’s wonderful mind has for us in the future!
