Hailing from the same groovy music scene that nursed the likes of influential rock bands like Green Day, or The Brian Jonestown Massacre, San Francisco pop outfit Decant, is delivering its own unique twist.

The band, initially a solo project by Joey Verdian in 2016, creates dark, almost post-apocalyptic ambiances through an unusual blend of traditional instruments like guitar, experimental electronic elements, and subversive song structures. Their distinctively expansive sound stems from the addition of frontperson Freddie Bytheway and keyboard/guitarist Van Jackson-Weaver (both members of Bay Area pop project Yassou), as well as clear homages to influences including an alternative blend of Radiohead’s experimental rock motifs, the avant-garde, pop-oriented presentation of FKA Twigs, and the trip-hop fusions of Portishead.

In their latest single, “Offshore,” Decant delves into the enigmatic world of the human psyche to describe feelings of disconnect, and discontentment in a relationship. “It was the middle of the pandemic, and my husband and I were trying to make our relationship survive the 13th year of marriage,” says Bytheway. “I could only describe this sensation as an ocean, the epitome of both awesome and dangerously vast distance.” The song’s explosively cathartic chorus phrase, repeated for almost half the song’s run time, “You are everything you want” serves as a powerful affirmation, resonating with listeners and driving home the song’s poignant message.

The band’s continued commitment to self-producing each release noticeably contributes to the track’s overall cohesion. This song sees Decant blend together relatively slow-paced synth progressions, richly layered vocals, and awe-inspiringly creative sampling that, for lack of a better expression, just works. Perhaps the track’s strongest selling point is its unique, 9/8 time signature. Coupled with drummer Thelonious Quimby’s precise timing, this time signature establishes a breath-like pulse that continuously applies and releases tension throughout the song.

Decant’s thought-provoking style and artistically authentic songwriting process are captured especially well in this latest project. The single release of “Offshore” is part of a continued push as they prepare to release a debut album later this year, including other singles such as, “Take Them,” and “Beverly.”
