Thank you to Divine Magazine for hosting me today! In Personal Best, Mike and Jessy discover a new kink together – breath play, also known as erotic asphyxiation. I had never gotten the appeal of this kink until the characters brought it with them and I started writing their sex scenes together. With Mike, I finally understood where it came from and parts of why it worked for him.

This happens a lot for me with writing. Characters will show up with kinks I’d never even really thought of all that much, at least consciously because usually, it’s clear I’ve been giving the kink some subconscious thought. Or other times I will decide I want to write a kink to see if I can make it work, make it sexy, make it make sense to myself. An example of this was Puppy Love – puppy and pony play seemed so foreign to me. Could I make it work? Then I wrote it and now it’s one of my favorite kinks. I do think I should write more of it in fact.

Funnily enough, I read in a review with Mike and Jessy that it was BDSM-lite, which surprised me because I thought the breath play would have made it fairly extreme. But perhaps the fact that Mike and Jessy are so clearly in love and that they are safe, sane and consensual, makes it seem less extreme once you’re in the midst of it.

I also have found that my bar for what’s really kinky has moved the more I’ve written and I’m no longer a good judge of what is super kinky and what’s just mildly kinky. Because on the whole, most of it doesn’t seem that extreme anymore. And every reader is different, too – their bar might be higher or lower than mine.

So tell me, what type of kink do you consider to be extremely kinky?

Mike Gauliet could be a world-class swimmer if he took better care of himself. He’s too good to let go, so his team coach calls in a private trainer, up-and-coming hardass Jessy Turner. Jessy locks Mike down, putting him on a strict regimen of diet and exercise that Mike resents a lot until he realizes the changes are making him a better swimmer.

Jessy finds Mike all but irresistible but keeps his distance and remains professional, focusing all his attention on what’s best for Mike and his career. The two of them resist their attraction to each other for as long as they can, but eventually they have to give into the heat between them.

When things go wrong, though, can they, and their sports careers, survive the strain?
