Since Donald Trump announced that he was planning on running for President, controversy has reigned supreme when it comes to political matters of any kind.
Almost every day, there’s been some sort of news that has raised eyebrows not only across the nation, but across the entire world, as the President continually flouts political norms and gives rise to enormous news stories, many of which are subsequently brushed off as “fake news”. From declaring that he is going to build a wall between the USA and Mexico (which Mexico would supposedly pay for), to his travel ban, the firing of FBI director James Comey, exaggerations concerning attendance of his inauguration, unorthodox engagements with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and derogatory comments regarding Haiti, El Salvador, and a whole host of African countries. Considering all of this, it’s not all too surprising that various individuals in the political realm are withdrawing their support for him. For now, let’s take a look at one of the most public withdrawals of support: Mike Crapo.
Who is Mike Crapo?
Mike Crapo is an Idaho Republican and US Senator. Until now, Mike Crapo’s votes were in line with Trump’s position 92.9% of the time. The two only disagreed on matters of disaster relief for Puerto Rico and other areas (Trump was in favour, Crapo was not), imposing sanctions on Russia, Iran and North Korea (Trump opposed, while Crapo was in favour), imposing sanctions on Russia (Trump again opposed and Crapo again voted for sanctions), and matters of 2017 fiscal year appropriations bill (Trump voted for, Crapo voted against). However, he has noted on Twitter that he “can no longer endorse Donald Trump”, followed by a full statement with his reasoning for the complete withdrawal of his support for the president.
Why Has Crapo Retracted His Support?
While Crapo unreservedly states that he believes that right wing, conservative leadership is necessary in the White House, he also notes that he has reached the decision that he cannot condone Trump’s consistently disrespectful, demeaning, and profane actions and comments towards women. Having worked for more than two decades in the field of domestic violence prevention, Crapo claims that Trump’s attempt to brush evidence of sexist comments about women under the carpet as “locker room talk” is completely unacceptable. Support for the president would go against his belief and goal of a duty to protect women from abusive and disparaging treatment.
Others Who Have Revoked their Support
Unsurprisingly, Crapo isn’t the only individual to have revoked his support for Trump throughout his Presidential campaign and leadership. Other notable individuals span right across the states. They include Utah US Senator Mike Lee and Utah Reps Jason Chaffetz, Mia Love, and Chris Stewart; Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski; Colorado Senator Cory Gardner, South Dakota Senator John Thune; and Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska to name just a few individuals.
While Trump still reigns supreme in the White House, his actions and comments seem to be alienating him from others in the political field, with many individuals even of similar political beliefs feeling the need to publically revoke their support of him and his policies.
