Madiba Centenary Celebrations in Full Swing
We are well into 2018 which is a year that is undoubtedly the year of Madiba Magic. This year marks the centenary anniversary of our beloved Nelson Mandela and celebrations are underway worldwide.
From government organised events to charity held commemorations, there are many opportunities to get onboard and be a part of the centenary celebration. As expected, the days leading up to Mandela Day and beyond are flooded with options ranging from academic to art to music to sport.
We’ve put together a list of the most exciting events on the horizon (so that you don’t have to!).
Bassline Africa Concert May 2018
May is Africa Month and the Bassline Fest is coming to celebrate just that. The musical event is entering its 14th annual run celebrating African vibrancy, dynamism and globalism. The event takes place over 3 days at Constitutional Hill in the heart of Jozi. The hashtag for the event, #BeTheLegacy is inspired by their partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
The orchestrators of the event will be working closely with NMF to ensure the promotion of Madiba’s legacy throughout the course of the 3 days. Through music and dialogue, Nelson Mandela will be celebrated in full force. Definitely an event you don’t want to miss! Tickets are available on their website.
Trek4Mandela Summit July 2018
July this year is something of a Madiba Month. The annual expedition to Kilimanjaro will be taking place on Mandela Day with a centenary twist to celebrate 100 years of Nelson Mandela. This year Trek4Mandela has paired up with Caring4Girls and the Imbumba Foundation who are aiming to raise enough funds to ensure that 350 000 girl children will not miss a day of school due to challenges faced when menstruating. Under the commemorative hashtag #Trek100, this campaign will also be rewarding 67 young girls who display excellence at school in spite of disadvantaged surroundings. The reward entails an opportunity to travel to see some of the Seven Wonders of the World. Be a part of this outstanding initiative by making a contribution to the cause via their website.
Bikers for Mandela July 2018
Another annual affair, the Bikers for Mandela initiative also takes place on Mandela Day with a team of over 100 bikers riding across Johannesburg to deliver various supplies to homes and shelters in need. Last year the team, who were made up of bikers from across the country, rode from Soweto to Sandton to carry out their cause. Get involved and get excited either as a biker or bystander. The exact details for this year have not been revealed yet but you can keep updated via their Facebook page to find out more.
Tribute Concert in Portugal July 2018
If you are in Europe around Mandela Day why not make a pit stop in Porto, Portugal to experience the Tribute Concert in honour of the centenary celebrations. The festival-like event will also feature an exhibition. The lineup and venue have not been released but keep your eyes on the Nelson Mandela Foundation website and social media platforms to stay informed.
uMgungungdlovu Mandela Marathon August
The Mandela Marathon holds immense significance, with its start point located at Manayi Hall in Edenvale where Mandela addressed the public for the last time prior to his arrest and the end point at the Capture site where he was arrested. The NBA Africa Game is heading to SA for its third time in August this year. The event is expected to be attended by some of the biggest former and current stars of the NBA as well as a range of influential people from the African continent including entrepreneurs, musicians and sports personalities.
The game between Team World and Team Africa will take place on the 4th of August in Gauteng, with the venue still to be confirmed. The game is being held in association with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and seeks to honour the centenary year of Madiba, a man who used sport as a tool to unite a divided SA. This year we were privileged to host the Presidential Awards. This event will be hosted by Presidential Shirt, the Presidential Shirt brand, supplier of the Madiba Shirt. Presidential redefines luxury for the 21st century, reinforcing its position as one of Africa’s most desirable fashion brands.
