Cedars is an electronic rock band from central Texas whose music incorporates the DIY ethos of bands like The Pixies and PJ Harvey, the haunting atmospheres of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, along with the infectious grooves of MuteMath.
Cedars is more than just a band: it is a vision of community, a community driven by the idea that beauty can save the world. Led by longtime friends Sandeigh Kennedy and Drew Heaton, they blend industrial and organic textures, drawing together disparate elements to marry complex sonic landscapes with compelling stories. Gritty synths and wispy vocals; hard hitting beats and delicate textures are the tools they use to tell powerful, authentic stories that explore truth and beauty.
What first got you into music?
I think all of us pretty much fell in love with music as kids. We’ve all been playing and creating music most of our lives. It’s definitely saved some of our lives more than once over the years. Music and art can often say what we can’t…or won’t.
What is your creative process like?
There’s a lot of collaboration. When Drew & Sandeigh write the songs – they create a skeleton and soul. It’s like a map. Then the rest of the band continues to add pieces until the song or video becomes its own entity. There’s such a sense of accomplishment when we create something together. Everyone bringing part of themselves to the table. It’s always more challenging, but the result is always more authentic and rich.
All of our music also has a visual component to it…the songs have a visual story to tell. Part of our process is creating a video to help share the heart of the music.
What about your music is rebellious, unconventional, or unusual?
The authenticity in our music feels rebellious. We like to talk about the things that our culture at large doesn’t.
What are your plans for any future releases?
We have a new single we’re planning to release this summer! Super excited for this one. (Be on the look out for “WomanKing”)
Are you planning any videos for your music?
YES! We have several out already on our YouTube page. We just released one for our song, “Funeral Dress”.
More videos coming! We’re working on a new one even as we type this.
Which are cooler? Dinosaurs or Dragons?
DRAGONS 100%
If you were a member of the Spice Girls, what would your spice handle be?

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?

The costumes we wore for our Funeral Dress video
If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself?
