Home Issues That Could Reduce Property Values

Written by Divine Magazine

Trying to sell your home for a decent price tag is a tricky process. There are so many factors that go into how you can list your house. Unfortunately, many of these factors happen right inside the home and are hard to get around without spending money. If you want to get the most out of your home’s sale, you should know about these home issues that could reduce property values so you can make a plan to fix them.

Poor Landscaping

If you’re not much a green thumb, it may cost you on your final listing price. Buyers don’t want to see a barren landscape that looks like no one has watered it in years. Taking care of your lawn, shrubs, bushes, and trees can translate into a direct benefit when you go to sell your house. It may be a lot of extra work, but poor landscaping can drop your home’s price quickly.

Maintenance Left for Later

There are a lot of maintenance projects that need to happen on a house over the years, from radon testing to plumbing fixes and far beyond. Projects like these that are continually put off can easily reduce your home’s value:

  • Cracked foundation
  • Fraying wires
  • Cracked or broken driveways and walkways
  • Outdated plumbing fixtures

It’s worth it to put a little money into fixing up the bigger issues your home has; it will pay off in the long run.

Outdated Rooms

A common home issue that could reduce your property’s value is a very outdated room or set of rooms. Certain parts of your home may have been upgraded recently, but there is likely still a room or two that are living in the past. These outdated rooms mean the buyer will need to update them, costing them more money. This translates into less money for your sale unless you want to update the room yourself.

DIY Home Improvements

No matter how handy you may think you are, many buyers don’t love hearing that you’ve added or changed something yourself. These DIY projects can often lead to homes not being up to safety codes. Unless you are a licensed contractor, your DIY improvements could hurt your chances of a quick and lucrative sale.
